Bernie Mac and Other Thoughts

Just a quick note before sharing some football thoughts... I was very saddened to hear about the death of Bernie Mac. I was a big fan of his comedy and acting and felt a closeness as a fellow Chicago native. What a tragedy for him to have died so young. Now some football ... I'm really excited about the upcoming season. Personally, I feel great and I know that some of our veteran leaders have returned to health. Coach Reid's "Over 30 Club," where he lets those players who are 30+ have every third day off at training camp, has helped me and I'm pretty sure that you'd get the same response if you ask Brian Dawkins, Tra Thomas, Jon Runyan and a few other guys. Also, having two under-30 performers - L.J. Smith and Lito Sheppard - return to the field this season after battling injuries last year will help us tremendously. Add to that the improvement shown by young players such as Stewart Bradley, Chris Gocong, and Brent Celek, and the depth of the team becomes a strength. I have no idea how the final roster will shake out but our offensive line is strong and the combination of Brian Westbrook, Correll Buckhalter and Lorenzo Booker will help us balance the offense. Our wide receiving corps has taken a lot of criticism but Reggie Brown has had a strong camp and Kevin Curtis has a full season in this offense - with 75 catches and 1,000 yards - under his belt. What we need to do is figure out a way to keep everyone involved and exploit their specific strengths by creating mismatches. This week in New England will be a final tuneup for many of the starters. In years past we didn't play much if at all in the final preseason game. We need to start the season strong and carry that through the rest of the season. I'm looking forward to Sunday, September 7 vs. the St. Louis Rams!

we are all looking forward to September 7th.
You guys look solid in the pre season games.
I'd like to know how you feel about DeSean jackson, he looked very good to me in the pre season games so far, I think he can have a big play- impact for us. I love that we are so much more healthy overall going into this season. we did ok last season, now we take the title this year. Go get 'em.

You've looked great all preseason and in training camp. Just keep smiling and having fun and the football part will fall into place it's important for to be serious but if your not having fun whats the point. Good luck this year and I'll be rooting for you guys through thick and thin good or bad.

That kid DeSean is the truth, I really think he will benefit the team. He's going to be your biggest playmaker other than Westbrook of course. BTW Westbrook is the BEST RB in the league to me or at least tied for best with LT.

Anyone who didn't feel at least a twinge of sadness at Bernic Mac's passing truly has a cold soul. He seemed to live to make other people laugh and be happy and it is a tragedy that he is gone too soon. As a person with inflammatory diseases myself (Lupus and RA) it's scary knowing something as simple as a severe cold can compromise your life because your immune system may not be able to handle it. R.I.P. Bernie.

I am also excited about the upcoming season. I normally don't make too much of preseason, but this year I got tickets to two games because I was happy with the draft and wanted to see what we were working with. It was great meeting you Sunday, even though it was only for about 10 fleeting seconds, but I'm happy with it. :) Good Luck this season and GO EAGLES!

Bernie was a straight shooter when it came to his comedy.................he was real. And he opitimzed the phrase " Father Figure". He not only was a father to his own kids , but took in his sisters kids and gave them a life that she could not.

The Lord must have needed him really bad..................we all will see him again.

Can't wait till September 7th!! Looks like a great year is coming up. Mcnabb you look really good and the shoulder doesnt look like it is bothering you. I t will be great to have L.J Smith back and heathy. I know it is only pre season but go bet those Pats! Show them that you have improved since 2004! Go EAGLES!! I think we will all miss B Mac. Loved his movies. He was a very funny guy!

I think a stong start is the most important thing the team has to do. Falling behind early in this division is not an opption. You have to win at least two of the first three. Good luck!!!!!

Bernie was great...my dad and I have a few of his one-liners we repeat...his passing was a shock.

Donovan - I wish you and all the guys the best of luck this season! You have so much support from the fans who are stuck in Florida. My husband says we can move back to the area as soon as my name is called on the season ticket wait list!

Donovan, this front office has screwed you and a lot of other players over. Guys like you, Dawk, B-West, Trotter, and Runyan only to name a few, have worked you asses off and stayed loyal to this organization only for them to continually slap you guys in the face. There's no doubt in anybody's mind that you guys would of won a Super Bowl had they just signed an elite receiver or made the right selections during the drafts. I really have a lot of respect for all you guys who have grinded it out and continue to try and bring the Lombardi Trophy to Philly. As much as I love being an Eagles fan it pisses me off seeing the crap this front office continues to pull. If you stay healthy and they let you go anytime soon I don't think I can continue to be a fan. They owe you more than they can or will ever know.

I guess this was a pre-injury post. I'm sure he wouldn't admit it in his blog but Donovan McNabb must be a little less confidence now that he's lost his playmaking WR. I agree that Desean Jackson is going to have a great rookie season but even if he goes above and beyond expectations, the Eagles will have a tough time getting past the Cowboys in that division.

Donovan just do it man! just tell 'em flat out that we're a pretty good team but we have a snowball's chance in hell at contending in the playoffs(let alone our own division) without an offensive pass game. TEs and RBs are NEVER supposed to be a QBs best targets.... they can be viable options but a WR who can actually make a difference is what we need.... the NFL is full of great WRs some QBs have 2 or more to throw to.... and here you are better than most and never given the right equipment to get the job done.... yet expected to do it all.
I love you Birds win or lose but when the heck do we help ourselves over that bump? we have a great team together but why not take 1 more step that we know will make us elite? Tell em Donovan! You go let Andy know how every damn fan feels.... and every player feels.
I mean for christ's sake we have 2 first round picks next year.... if we used one to get Anquan Boldin I think we would live and AZ would be satisfied. These front office charades have gone on long enough, tell em to quit being cheap! tell em to grow a pair and buy that weapon of 'PASS' destruction. I love you guys win or lose..... but how long can we accept defeat knowing fully what the key is to our winning?

I've been an Eagles fan for over 30 years and I live in Victoria BC Canada. That's the west coast. I'm hoping you read my comments. You are a class human being and you are an amazing athlete. I'm 51 years old. I get all my families children to be Eagle fans. I buy them hats and things. I couldn't ask for a better role model than you. Ever since the fans booed you in the draft you have done everything humanly possible to prove them wrong. In my opinion, you more than proved them wrong. I know your going to win the SB this year. Your going to have an awesome year! When you win the SB you will be assured that you finish your career in Philly. Maybe then all the doubters will shut up. Have a great season and be assured that your role model presence is felt all the way to Victoria, BC Canada. GO EAGLES
