How and Why it Happened

I’ve been asked, and before it’s all over I’ll probably be asked again, what was my involvement in Michael Vick coming to the Eagles. Here’s what I know:

Michael and I have known each other since the time I was asked to host him on his visit to Syracuse University. Anybody that’s ever been through that knows that current college athletes are asked to spend time with possible recruits who are similar or share something in common (play the same position, come from the same part of the country, etc.). During that time, I had a chance to get to know Michael pretty well. And, although he decided to go to Virginia Tech, we kept in touch and remained friends.

Fast forward to today – I know what Michael was accused and convicted of and I don’t like it at all. I have had dogs all my life and consider myself a dog-lover. I am in no way excusing Michael for what happened but he was punished for his crime. He served his time and, at least I believe, has learned from it. I believe Michael is a changed person and that he deserves a chance at putting his life back together. A life, now, that will include being an activist to stop cruelty to animals.

In mid-July before training camp started, I asked Coach Reid if we would be interested in having Michael join the Eagles and explained why I thought it would be good for both Michael and the team (Andy and I have an understanding that we will never discuss the details of our private exchanges). There was another time during camp where the subject was brought up again by me. It was not until Kevin Kolb was injured last Monday that I was given any indication that something might happen with Michael.

I wanted Michael to come to Philadelphia and, in any way he can, help bring a Super Bowl championship to the City. There is no doubt he is a uniquely talented player that can add to our offensive weapons. For him personally, I want to see him continue to grow as a person, spend time with his family and re-establish himself as a leader on and off the field. Due to the nature of what happened and the attention it has received, it may not always be easy for him but he seems up for the challenge. Fortunately, with a tremendous individual like Tony Dungy in his corner, he will have the support he needs.

I thank Andy for considering my suggestion. I also thank Mr. Lurie for taking the time to talk with Michael and making what he thought was a very difficult decision.

Michael now admits he did a horrible thing – he’s not making excuses or asking for forgiveness. He only wants an opportunity to prove he’s a changed person and to help others.

I've said the same thing in some of my posts on YB. I thank you personally Donovan for being the awesome individual that you are. I believe from watching his press conference that he is a changed man and that he is sorry for what he did. I'm a dog lover myself and don't like what he did. He's had a change in him and I'm thankful for it. I support Michael Vick to the Eagles. I believe people change. I know from experience. Welcome to Michael Vick and I wish him all the success.

  I appreciate the fact, just as you stated 5ivefan, that Donovan is a human being that understands that people make mistakes and what Donovan did was show me once again why he is I feel and this is my opinion, the best QB to wear an Eagles uniform. His unselfishness I hope proves to a lot of people that he is truly a class act.

I think you are a good man Donovan.You could have easily turned your back on Michael for the things he did but you did not. In fact you did the opposite, you extended a forgiving hand with a compassionate heart. Good Job!

pure class..this is not just a football story..this can be a redemption story..i have been rescuing dogs,horses whatever i could and i love them all but this is a humane being we are talking about and as such should be given the chance at being able to help educate others why this whole dog biz is bad..and yes let's save the dogs..and..let's go get us a superbowl!!

Agreeing with all the above. What Vick did was WRONG and DISGUSTING, and I was one of the FIRST people hoping he didn't get away with it. He lost everything AND went to prison. More than what I ever thought would happen to him. But how many times, how long, and in how many ways does he have to pay for his past actions? I was his press conference and he seemed very sincere. I admit the entire thing has been more palatable to me because of Tony Dungy's involvement. I'm on board to give him the opportunity to prove he is changed man and show that he can help this team reach a Super Bowl.

The respect of fans, teammates, kids who were excited to watch him play and wanted to be like him, and hell, people in general? HIS FREEDOM FOR 2 YEARS???? He's been given a chance in the NFL again, but it won't be easy. Hasn't he been speaking publicly about animal cruelty already?   He didn't really lose anything. He just went to jail. He still has a career to come to back to as we see now, and everyone says all is good. I think as long as he DOES go around speaking publicly out against cruelty to animals, then I will believe him, if he DOES try to help dogs that have been devastated by horrible cruel owners and gambling nuts..THEN I will believe he has done what is right. I hope you're right, Don. This has really split the fan base, and made it difficult for many to support this team. I hope that Michael understands what a huge gamble the team has made for him, and that he takes the opportunity to prove that he really is sorry for what he did, and wants to make amends.

No matter what you say Donovan, stupid journalists will write what they want and will try to create a "QB controversy" as has happened already. I'm a diehard fan who has had your back since day 1 and that won't ever change! You've done so much good for this team and have made our team exciting to watch the last 10 seasons. When a Pitbull bites a child or another dog there are people who want to put the dog down. Then there are people who take the dog and attempt to rehabilatate the Pit. We should at least give Humans a simular chance. McNabb shows pure class and with Tony, a inspirational, positive Black man in Mike's corner things have a good start. Ultimately it is up to Mike to get it together.

This is a great blog---I am from richmond,virgina area---and I know there was dog fighting going on--was hidden from main stream america---Micheal Vick,did a terrible thing,but to his defense,his friends though it was KOOL!!!POSSE LIKE--he did not want to let them down---They let him down,and landed in prison. Intentionally tortures any dog or cat.
Class C Felony
Fine up to $5000

he got off easy as I can tell....except maybe the fine part, but he had the money I suppose so the judge decided punitive damages were sufficient in order to deter any future behavior..don't forget they had guns and drugs and all types of who knows what going on as well.

Stalworth got off easy, jared allen got off easy, Ray Lewis, got off easy. Vick kills dogs and he is the anti christ to some, thats pretty rough.

  You know I never critisized McNabb for reaching out and giving the guy a chance, however, when this story first came out Vick was prosecuted, and the people in tbe NFL said he wasn't coming back, it was horrific...blah blah blah. So for only TWO years to go by and he HASNT done any kind of public speaking or anything like that except to the media in his famous speech ... I just don't see why all is forgiven so quickly? is it because he is a football player? ofcourse! We see it ALL the time. Perfect example Ray Lewis someone cited. I LOVE RAY LEWIS! After watching his intrvw on 60 mins this evening at least now I understand how he got involved in it. It was a learned behvr for him from the age of 8 and growing up in his surroundings. Donovan: I have supported you since day one. But this Michael Vick thing has me really conflicted. How can someone do such disgusting, heinous brutal things to animals and enjoy it? Can that person really change? Getting enjoyment from torturing a living thing isn't a "mistake," it's who and what you are. I'm all for second chances, but I'm having a big problem with this one. It's divided the fanbase and left people like me torn. I've been a diehard fan since I was old enough to know what football was. I live and breathe the eagles. But I am so against this move that I don't know where I stand as a fan anymore. I'd be lost without my Eagles games every Sunday, but at the same time, my conscious is telling me not to support a team (or a league) that makes a role model of someone like Michael Vick. I think I represent a large number of fans. I hope this move doesn't backfire. The eagles may lose more fans than they expected...as well as respect around the league.

  I've been feeling the same way and honestly don't think I can watch them when he dresses for games. That gives me 6 (at least). The Just seeing him at practice turned my stomach - sooo I think this will be a good season to watch and enjoy other games just for the love of the game.

everyone does deserve a second chance and what vick does with this is yet to be seen, but how does he fit into the eagles offense, mcnabb your are the starting quarterback and unless you get rid of a.j. feeleyor he doesn't mind being a third string, vick will either be a very well paid second string quarterback or the most paid third string quarterback

Donovan has basically volunteered, like Dungy, to be a positive influence in Vick's life moving forward. Assuming Vick continues to be proactive in the fight against animal cruelty he will have an opportunity to get into football shape and perhaps help the Eagles win some games later this year. At the end of the season Vick will be very attractive to other teams and the Eagles will trade him before next season for a potential high draft pick. Vick will also act as an insurance policy against D-MAC getting a season ending injury. (I pray that does not happen and that Donovan has great health) I do not see Vick actually playing here in 2010 unless something bad happened to Donovan. This situation will be a win-win situation for both the Eagles and for Michael Vick. The only way this will not work is if Vick blows his opportunity in the NFL by acting improperly off the field. I firmly believe with the support system around Vick that this will not happen. Remember also that all the pressure is on Vick. If he screws up off the field just once the Eagles will release him. It is a calculated move that has high reward if Vick can do his part.

I think what happened with Michael opened the eyes of many to just one of the barbaric things that contiue to go on in this country and in the world in general. I am glad that the Eagles decided not to write Michael off as someone who can't be saved, or can't make a positive contribution to society just because a (horrible) mistake was made. I pray that my own son (as Sheldon Brown pointed out), never makes a mistake that will put him in the judgement of those who have the potential to stamp out any of the positive qualities that he may have had before his lapse in judgement.
I thank God for forward thinking people like the Commisioner, Tony Dungy, the Eagles organization, and Donovan. This issue has given me a deeper respect and love for the Eagles. Much success to Michael and the Eagles! Fly Eagles Fly!

Well, I'm glad to hear that there MAY have been football reasons for bringing him to Philly - up till now it's all been about giving him a second chance and i don't know what that has to do with the game of football.

Don, I've been one of your staunchest supporters but on this I've got to question your judgement. Your first bad game and people will be screaming for him, splitting the team and creating controversy worse than when TO was here.

I also don't see what he bbrings to the party. Never liked him, never thought much f him as a quarterback. Seeing him with an Eagles hat on turns my stomache.

frankly, if he makes it on the field I'll be changing the channel - that's after 50 years of being a customer of the franchise. Yes a customer, because that's what fans are. We buy the product and this is one product I don't buy.

When he self destructs or just leaves, I'll probably be back.
Football will be different for me but I can't stand the way he was sold to us in addition to what he is - a marginal QB.

I am not an Eagles fan, but I am a fan of football and life. I believe what you, the commish, tony and the Eagles organization are trying to do for Vick is a very good thing. Whether he looks or talks sincere right now, it does not matter. Vick will be judged by his actions off the field and then on to show that he really is rehabilitated for the horrific crimes he was a part of. I wish him the best and all of you who have given him the 2nd chance he deserves. Good luck on your journey for a Super Bowl title.

Everyone derserves a second chance. He has TD in his corner and hopefully #5 can set the right example for him. You should always pay it forward, and that is what this feels like to me. I would just like to recommend keeping him away from the porn pool.

  Bowl: I would tend to agree with you about the McNabb commenting, but when you look at all of the responses he gets on one of his post how could he respond to them all anyway? In like 15 minutes there are like 80 replies to include several cheap shots by Monster and others. You start responding to some of these, then the people will never stop sending messages, but I do think he reads some of them.

I just think it was a little offensive for you to assume that we will all forget about what happened when he scores a touchdown or first down. Not all Eagles fans are robots and as a lifelong Eagles fan, I for one was a little offended that you would think so little of my love for dogs that I would forget after someone on my favorite team scores a touchdown.

Chast128, I appreciate your sincere prayers for my son. I believe that my son should be fine in regards to dog fighting. Number 1: It's not in his heart. Number 2: It's not in his neighborhood, and it's not condoned anywhere that he's been. Number 3: The Michael Vick has shown us the consequences of participating in those bararic events. However, there are other societal illls that I fear and pray that he avoids.
Frankly, I'm surprised at the outrage that people have expressed toward dog fighting. I've seen the thrill that it brings people to see the destruction of life or near destruction of life. The entertainment industry makes a killing (pardon the expression) off of the subject matter. I think the only things that prevents people from practicing what entertains them are opportunity, ability, or legality. I hope that this is a signal that we are beginning to hold ALL life forms (including human) precious.
In regards to humans, my hope is probably null and void since the thought and practice is that you can rehabilitate a dog that has been trained to perform viciously, but you can't rehabilitate a human in the same fashion.

I wish everyone in this whole story, including Mr. McNabb, would just be honest about what this is REALLY all about- money and winning games. This is not about second chances, personal redemption, and forgiveness. If Michael Vick was a lower ranked player, I doubt anybody would have offered him a chance at redemption, let alone even know when he got out of jail. As far as saying he made a "mistake", doing something for 6 years and not stopping until the law comes down on you is not a mistake, it's a crime. Finally, I cringe every time I hear the argument "everyone deserves a second chance." I'm a Philly teacher and if I committed a felony, I highly doubt anyone would give me a second chance in any classroom in America. Then again, I make $40,000 a year before taxes struggling to educate students who look up to NFL players as role models, so I guess I need to earn a little more before I qualify for that second chance.

Would you expect anything less from Donovan McNabb? What he did by getting inside Andy's ear about bringing Vick here proves how good of a person he is and just how good of a leader he is. Donovan is amazing and I consider myself lucky to be able to cheer for him during Eagles games.

Now I would have said something similar to this regardless of if Donovan did this or not. But an act like this just makes me even more proud to know and allow other to know that he's my favorite Philadelphia Eagle and favorite NFL Quarterback of all time.

Well said Donovan!!! You are an amazing, unselfish player and individual! I love watching and listening to your humor to the media in the press conferences!

I have also had dogs my whole life and am a huge dog lover!!! I absolutely hate what Vick and the others did! There is no excuse for it at all! BUT, as you said, he has done his time and now just wants the opportunity to play football and show everyone he has changed! Everyone makes mistakes...and everyone deserves a 2nd chance! I think it's great that the Eagles have given him his chance. Despite what he did, he is an awesome player!

I am sooo excited for the season and can't wait to see how the Eagles use Vick!!! LET'S GET THAT RING EAGLES!!!!! E-A-G-L-E-S! EAGLES!!!!!!!!

(1) Our 5 is a class act - I'm wondering how many other QB1's are out there advising that Vick is a decent pick-up (2) Our 5 is a competitor still, so what if he ALSO feels that Vick will help us win a championship (3) Our 5 is an empathetic human being - love pets, hate pets, doesn't matter. Vick was tried, convicted and served his sentence for his crime, correct? I won't even go into the comparative of others in the league that served next to no time for their crimes. ATTA BOY 5!!!!

Eagles fan you guys is getting a big time player in vick; which i live in atlanta and watched most of his games. That falcons team the eagles played in the nfc title game was a joke, and the only reason they went that far was all vick. I hope you guys enjoy what we got to see every week. The eagles always had a good defense, but the offense from my little thougts needed another gear, and now they have it. When he scores one of those tds he never show the other player up. He isn't a bad of a person as you here on television. One day is something happen to your son or daughter would you want a second chance for them? SURE YOU WOULD. Now i would rather play marbles on sundays than watch the falcons with out vick. I would actually come home early just to watch the falcons with vick. I'm happy he's in philly where they really care
about football. With that said about football it reallly is about a person life here so give the man a chance philly. The wheels can come off any person at any time so each person in the world is no different. Now go get that ring!!

I've been McNabb's #1 fan for quite some time. However, upon hearing about the role he played in assisting Vick in getting another chance to showcase his God given talent, I was not surprised. McNabb is an awesome football player and a even better man. The attitude that he has maintained since he was drafted has been nothing less than ULTRA CLASSY. HE IS THE BEST IN THE NFL..

My respect for you, Andy and Jeff grew to new heights with your decision to bring Mike to the Eagle team. This is a good decision all the way around for everyone concerned. The NFL gets a marque player back and settled in with a class act and top notch team, The team gets a surburb talent that may make a difference in getting a hall of famer like Donovan a superbowl ring, Mike gets his chance of redemption which we all as human beings trust can happen to us all and lastly the area Human Society and childrens networks gain a spokesman that can add true help to bringing issues to the forefront. The City of brotherly Love is the BEST city for something like this to happen in. And I am proud of Donovan's stance, and the support from all the players and the organization in general.
