Mariners DFA 2011 No. 2 overall pick Danny Hultzen

The Seattle Mariners' new GM, Jerry Dipoto, all but promised that changes were afoot in his introductory press conference:

"The lineup needs to be a little longer, the rotation needs to be a little deeper, the bullpen needs to have more layers than it presently has.”

Of those changes is Friday's report that the team has designated pitcher Danny Hultzen for assignment. Hultzen was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times suggests that the 25-year-old lefty will clear waivers and accept an assignment to Seattle's minor league system.

Hultzen's career thus far has been hampered by shoulder issues, despite rehab stints and many promising outings at the minor league level. After a helter-skelter campaign in 2013, he underwent surgery that left him sidelined for the entirety of the 2014 season. He had a good showing during spring training in 2015, but his shoulder reportedly couldn't hold up.
