Dennis Wideman speaks out on 20-game suspension

Calgary Flames defensemen Dennis Wideman spoke out publicly Thursday for the first time for since being suspended 20 games by the NHL for hitting linesman Don Henderson in the back.

"Firstly, I want to apologize to Don Henderson," Wideman said. "I feel awful about what happened. Hopefully he's recovering and is going to be back on the ice soon. I feel bad about the whole situation. The last seven days have been tough."

The incident, which occurred in a game against the Nashville Predators on Jan. 27, saw Wideman cross-check Henderson from behind as he was skating up the ice.

Wideman initially said it was an accident, but it sure looked intentional.

"Never in my career have I ever disrespected or done anything like this to an official," Wideman added. "I think I've prided myself on having a great working relationship with the official and I hope to continue that when I get out there."

The 32-year-old Wideman will forfeit over $500,000 worth of salary over the course of his 20-game suspension.
