'I used to take it as a compliment…' Floyd Mayweather’s prospect doesn’t want to be ‘Tank 2.0’, instead make name for himself
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the face of boxing for well over two decades. He then mentored Gervonta “Tank” Davis who went on to earn the same glory that his mentor had. Now another prospect who is under the wing of Mayweather is Curmel Moton. He is often compared with Davis for similarities in his boxing style as well as appearance with the latter.

It is a common fact that everyone in the world, no matter what field, wants to make a name for themselves. It is true in the case of Curmel Moton as well.

In a recent interview, he was asked his opinion on being coined as Tank 2.0. He had the following to say:

I used to take it as a compliment when I was an amateur..but now I feel like I want to make a name for myself. I don’t want to be 2.0 of nobody. I want to be the 1st me, make my own name.

– Curmel Moton in an interview with NaJi Chill

Gervonta Davis, however, is no longer professionally and contractually under Mayweather’s promotions. Mayweather and he still share a close bond. Davis fought under the Mayweather label for 7 long years before he decided to part ways. He went on to win huge fights including the likes against Ryan Garcia to make a name for himself. Mayweather was too present in most of his protege’s major fights.

Curmel Moton too wants to establish a legacy of his own and wants to be remembered by his name. However, the boxer is still in the early phase of his career and needs to develop a lot to reach up to the level of Mayweather and Davis.

But the mindset of the young boxer is commendable. He strives to climb the ladder of success alone with no one pushing him. This is a mindset that should be inculcated in the younger generations that always look for a shortcut.

Gervonta Davis’s time as a fighter under Mayweather Promotions

Gervonta Davis’s tenure under the Mayweather Promotions umbrella unfolded as a transformative chapter in his boxing career. This dream-like mentorship wasn’t merely a shared ring, it was an exploration into the fight game. Mayweather, a multiple weight-class champ, assumed the dual mantle of mentor and promoter, creating an atmosphere where Davis could showcase his skills and unveil his extraordinary aptitude.

Within Mayweather Promotions, Gervonta Davis ascended greatly, clinching world titles across a spectrum of weight classes. Mayweather’s strategic plan wasn’t just about victories. It was a symphony of bouts meticulously selected to lead to Davis’s ascendancy. The spectacle of Davis’s fights etched a signature on the canvas of boxing.

Yet, the union transcended the ring. It sculpted Gervonta Davis into a marketable personality outside the realms of boxing. The legacy of Davis’s tenure under Mayweather Promotions extends beyond titles and triumphs. Hence it can be said the bond between Davis and Mayweather resonates as a pivotal moment in the prior’s journey toward greatness.
