Former Michigan State Spartans star Adreian Payne was shot and killed in Orlando, Florida early Monday morning, ESPN reported. He was 31 years old.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Payne was transported to the hospital where he later died. A suspect named Lawrence Dority has been arrested for the shooting on a first-degree murder warrant.
Payne was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2014 and spent four seasons in the NBA playing for multiple teams before leaving to play overseas. He is mostly known for his college hoops career where he was All-Big Ten second team in his junior and senior years at MSU. In the 2013-14 season, he averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and led the Spartans to the Elite Eight. He also broke MSU’s postseason record with 41 points against Delaware in the first round of that tournament.
RIP Adreian Payne.

The Dayton, Ohio native was also known for his bond with eight-year-old cancer patient Lacey Holsworth, who became a fixture at Spartans games that season. Holsworth passed away not long after the conclusion of the 2014 season.
So sad to hear that former Michigan State star Adreian Payne passed away at the age of 31. AP was an outstanding player for Tom Izzo, and befriended Lacey Holsworth through her battle with cancer. RIP Adreian Payne. pic.twitter.com/YLXVGwINCV
