San Diego State coach offers great explanation for timeout decision

San Diego State is on its way to its first ever national championship game in the NCAA men's tournament thanks to a thrilling, buzzer-beating win on Saturday.

The sequence of events that led to Lamont Butler's winning shot, however, did not exactly see by-the-book coaching from SDSU head coach Brian Dutcher. He also had a quick-witted answer for why it played out that way.

Dutcher had a couple of late decisions which might have raised eyebrows had the Aztecs lost. For starters, when trailing by one point and with only a six-second differential between shot clock and game clock, Dutcher did not have his team foul Florida Atlantic.

And when that worked out, he doubled down on his unorthodox coaching tactics, electing to hold onto his timeout after the Aztecs got the ball back for one final possession. Instead, he allowed his players to run the ball up the court and take matters into their own hands.

It worked.

So why did he decide not to call a timeout?

Simple.

He said he ran out of plays.

He almost certainly had at least one play left, but it is still a great answer in the aftermath of a thrilling win. The more likely reason for why he did not call a timeout is that he wanted to keep FAU from having an opportunity to set up its defense after seeing the Aztecs' own offensive setup. He trusted his players to take advantage of a chaotic situation. They did exactly that.
