CAREER BACKGROUND

Originally growing up in Oklahoma, Logan Hall later moved to Belton, Texas during his sophomore year of high school. He played his final two seasons of high school football at Belton High School. Hall received all-district honors for 2016. And during his senior season, he recorded 54 total tackles and 10 tackles for loss. 247Sports rated Hall as a three-star recruit coming out of high school. Ultimately, he chose Houston over other offers like Colorado State, Tulsa and Toledo.

Immediate Playing Time

It did not take long for Hall to see the field for the Cougars defense. As a true freshman in 2018, he appeared in all 13 games. Hall recorded 14 total tackles that season, along with three tackles for loss and one forced fumble. 2019 saw the defender fill a rotational role once again. However, he did make three starts with 12 total games played. Hall posted 14 total tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and 0.5 sack as a sophomore.

Becoming A Starter

The COVID pandemic affected the Houston Cougars 2020 season in different ways. It also shortened the campaign to just eight games played. Hall would appear in all of them, starting seven of the eight. He would go on to register 23 total tackles, three quarterback hurries, two tackles for loss and one sack.

Hall’s senior season in 2021 was also his coming out party. He not only made more plays for the Houston defense. But, Hall also served a larger role at both defensive tackle and defensive end. The defensive lineman also had a greater impact in the opponent’s backfield. To finish the season, he had 43 total tackles, 22 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries in 12 games played. Hall went on to receive first team All-AAC honors for his 2021 season. Later on, he participated in practices in Mobile, Alabama after receiving an invite to showcase his talents at the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

SCOUTING REPORT

Instead of listing positives and negatives for traits, this year we will be listing the best trait of each prospect and work our way down to the biggest area of improvement/absent trait(s), from top to bottom.

Versatility

Logan Hall aligned all across the Houston defensive line. He can win from the defensive end position on early downs. On longer downs and distances, Hall is just as effective when he kicks inside to defensive tackle. There is plenty of production that the defender has had from all spots. Specifically, Hall has won from the 5 technique, base defensive end in a 4-3 front and as the 3 technique in a three man front. The team that drafts him will have to ultimately decide how much he moves around the defensive line, if at all. However, Hall has the pedigree and production to have a strong case to continue doing so.

Length

Hall possesses a “first guy off the bus” type of frame. Simply put, his stature is a gift and the length in his arms has progressed his game even further. Hall’s arms are not just massive. Furthermore, he knows how to use that to his advantage effectively. The way in which he extends away from his frame allows him more time and space to slip off of blocks. On top of that, Hall understands how to maintain that separation once he gets it. He has improved in gaining this detachment more often throughout the course of games.

First Step Explosiveness

Hall is extremely sudden against opposing offensive linemen once the ball is snapped. Overall, his first step can catch opponents off guard. This shows up more when matching up against interior offensive linemen. Those blockers are forced to uncoil their hips and flip their shoulders to try and force him to their outside shoulder. Meanwhile, Hall is just as quick when moving linearly, as he is laterally. This defender’s short area burst is a sneaky good addition to his game.

Lateral Mobility

Terrifically, Hall is able to recover and force his way through traffic, in order to make stops in the outside areas of the field. He can surprise opposing ball carriers with his backside pursuit effort. Hall has a motor that continuously runs hot. As a result, he is able to produce at a relatively high clip in all areas of the field, given his larger frame. Hall can also play with multiple styles within this area as well. This includes a crashing style, a more technically refined style with his hand counters, or even just relying on his quickness.

Hand Counters

This is yet another area in which Hall improved throughout his college career. Most notably, the Houston product incorporated an effective swim move to his arsenal more often in 2021. With that aforementioned length and burst, this allows Hall to eat up ground quickly when penetrating the opposing quarterback’s pocket. He also uses a club move to swipe the opposing blocker’s hands away from his chest.

Mostly, I would say he has improved when you look at keeping his hands within his frame more often, and not becoming too high or wide. There is one move that Hall was most effective with, to where that may not matter in terms of technical refinement. This would be the bull rush. Most importantly, Hall possesses plenty of power and heavy hands. That appears to wear down opponents quickly, to boot.

Flexibility

All in all, I would categorize Hall as a more slippery player, than he is bendy. There is not going to be a lot of reps where he rushes the passer while being consistently picture perfect, per se. Hall still reduces rush angles urgently and collapses astonishingly well in close quarters. On the other hand, he can make stops that are not always possible for other defenders. Because of his length and ample tackle radius, Hall is able to reach opposing ball carriers from tough angles, while possibly being out of position.

Football IQ

The ability to handle different defensive line roles effectively shows off some of the intelligence that Hall has. From a timing perspective, he is not necessarily horrible in sustaining solid foot or eye discipline. He generally has a solid sense of reading and recognizing play flow. However, Hall can still stand to add a quicker processing skill at the next level. It is an item that can be improved with further coaching. Yet, Hall has recently shown better results when it comes to reading blocks and opposing offensive fronts.

Run Defending

That mental processing and deciphering through traffic is still a work in progress for Hall as he enters the NFL. But still, he has been able to live off of an intense, urgent and relentless style of play upfront. His durability appears to outlast opposing offensive linemen as the game gets deeper. There are times where you wonder if he can start the game off quicker, so to speak. Hall can sometimes provide too many wasted movements against blockers when facing the opposing rushing attack. Accordingly, he can sometimes take himself out of the play, before a chance to make a stop even resonates.

CHIEFS FIT

Logan Hall is the type of defensive linemen that the Kansas City Chiefs gravitate towards. This includes having heavy hands, power at the point of attack, length and toughness. At the same time, he can infuse some items and skills into the current defense that has not been consistent in recent years. Hall also possesses sneaky or cunning athleticism and quickness. You may not expect it from him. Though, there is a quick development that Hall has made to understand how to win more often with those items.

He does most of his damage as a pass rusher, which the Chiefs need more production from in 2022. Finally, much of Hall’s best football is in front of him.
