Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson speaks on NIL experience: ‘Do it the right way’

Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson has been creating plenty of buzz on campus.

A four-star recruit in 2019, Jefferson took over first string duties in 2021 and immediately shined with back-to-back seasons of over 2,600 yards passing and a touchdown to interception rate of 45:9.

Becoming a recognizable face in college sports was just the start. Thanks to NIL, he’s been able to make good on his fame, giving back to those who mean the most to him.

“It’s a big difference,” Jefferson told Hawg Sports. “Just being able to provide for my family. That’s the main thing with how I look at NIL, just being able to provide for my family and have some type of financial support, just being able to send money back home if my mom needs it or if things are getting tough on her. I can send some money back home and make sure everybody is straight. She’s made a lot of sacrifices for me, so being able to pay her back, bit by bit, and do as much as I can for her.”

Aside from his family, Jefferson, a native of Sardis, Mississippi, has made the most of his platform by supporting the greatest Mississippi community. In September 2022, amid the Jackson water crisis, Jefferson partnered with Arkansas 211, an organization created by the United Way of Arkansas, to provide relief for those affected.

Thanks to NIL, Jackson has been able to do good for his family and others around him, something he says is great for those who are able to capitalize on the new laws in college sports.

“You’re getting paid to do what you love to do. You just want to be able to take advantage of it,” Jefferson said. “Guys before didn’t have this opportunity, so just being able to be smart about it and do it the right way. Don’t get careless with it, and be able to mold yourself.”

Heading into his final season in Fayetteville, Jefferson said he’s ready for the road ahead and is locked in on his goals both on and off the field.

“I’m extremely confident now,” Jefferson said. “I know what’s ahead of me. I have my goals set on what I want to accomplish this season and for my future career. I’m pretty level-headed, [with a] clear mindset. I don’t have any distractions distracting me right now. I’m having fun, enjoying each and every day with my teammates. I’m ready to get it started.”
