Bulked Up Colston Loveland Looks Poised For Breakout Season

Michigan is poised to be special in 2023 with talent, experience and depth across the board on both sides of the ball. Last year, Michigan rolled into the season with two very capable tight ends in Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker. All ended up getting hurt and ultimately transferred to Iowa, while Schoonmaker went on to be Michigan's second-leading receiver with 35 catches for 418 yards and three scores.

Tight ends can thrive in Jim Harbaugh's system, which is why 2023 could be a monster season for sophomore tight end Colston Loveland. As a freshman, Loveland showed that he can do some special things. He only caught 16 balls for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but both scores were big time and he just looked like he belonged. Now, he really looks like he belongs.

Now listed at 6'5", 245 pounds after playing last year at 237, Loveland looks even more like a man at the tight end position. After a solid rookie season, Loveland is ready to build on his early success the same way he's built up his body.

It's going to be very interesting to see how targets and receptions are distributed among the 2023 crop of pass catchers. Ronnie Bell and his 62 grabs are off to the NFL, potentially creating several opportunities for others. Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson will likely be JJ McCarthy's top two wide receivers in 2023, as they had 32 and 25 catches respectively last year, but Loveland might have something major to say about that.
