College football Week 5: Players to watch

Let's just say it: There are some great games this weekend. Of course, Ohio State at Penn State tops them all, but there is quite a list on the undercard that makes this week one of the best the season has produced.

Stanford at Notre Dame. West Virginia at Texas Tech. BYU at Washington. Oregon at Cal. Virginia Tech at Duke. Even Syracuse at Clemson is a solid game, (Remember, the Orange beat the Tigers last year.) Plus there are a lot of conference games that could produce more upsets.

We've also seen new players step into the spotlight and have big seasons so far. So let's look at the players to watch in week 5.

Ian Book, Notre Dame

Ian Book, Notre Dame

Book was named the starter before the Irish stomped Wake Forest last Saturday, so he's the man for now. In a little over a game this year, he's thrown for 338 yards on 28 of 37 passing and three scores through the air. Against the Demon Deacons, Book also ran for 43 yards and three TDs. Up next is Stanford for a huge game in South Bend on Saturday night.

Alan Bowman, Texas Tech

Bowman is having a big season. He's second in FBS in passing yards (1,557) and has thrown 10 touchdowns so far. Last week at Oklahoma State, he threw for 397 yards and two scores...one week after tossing over 600 yards and five TDs against a darn good Houston squad. Now the Red Raiders host West Virginia in what is a huge Big 12 matchup..

Squally Canada, BYU

Canada is BYU's leading rusher, and while his stats don't really move the needle, his story does. He comes from a family that has taken in a lot of troubled kids with tough backgrounds to get them on the right track. His family has helped change a lot of lives, so if you find yourself watching the Cougars' showdown at Washington this Saturday, Canada is someone to root for.

Eric Dungey, Syracuse

The senior quarterback has had quite a breakout season thus far. He's been setting school records as well as leading the Orange to a 4-0 record as they head to Clemson this Saturday. Not only has Dungey thrown for nine touchdowns to just one interception, but he also leads Syracuse in rushing.

Will Grier, West Virginia

We might have yet another Big 12 quarterback winning the Heisman Trophy if Grier has anything to say about it. Last week against Kansas State, he threw for 356 yards and five touchdowns. In just three games this season, Grier already has 14 touchdowns and has thrown at least four in each game. This week his Mountaineers head to Texas Tech in what should be a shootout.

Quentin Harris, Duke

Duke just entered the Top 25 and faces an angry Virginia Tech team in a key ACC Coastal Division game. This will be the third start for Blue Devils' quarterback Quentin Harris. So far, Harris has done a fantastic job, tossing three touchdowns in both games he has started. Last week, the Hokies let a new quarterback walk all over them. Can Harris do the same?

Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State

Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Give Haskins a ton of credit. As a sophomore, he has come in and had great success despite a rather trying start to the season. He's thrown for nearly 1,200 yards already and 16 TDs to just one interception. His biggest test is right in front of him, as a huge game at Penn State looms Saturday night.

Justin Herbert, Oregon

Sure, losing that huge lead to Stanford last week stings, but it still was sort of Herbert's coming out party. He completed 26 of his 33 passes (he had just two incompletions in regulation) for 346 yards and a touchdown. He's already thrown 13 TDs this season and has the Ducks back as a threat in the Pac-12. Oregon has another big Pac-12 North game this week as it heads to Berkeley to face a rising Cal squad.

Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Lawrence has been officially named the starter for Clemson's game against Syracuse this weekend and likely for the foreseeable future. Lawrence played well against Georgia Tech last week, completing 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns. Here's a stat for you: Alabama and Clemson will have quarterbacks on their bench who have gone 42-4 as college starters.

McKenzie Milton, UCF

McKenzie Milton, UCF

What can't Milton do? Itching to get back on the field after UCF's game at North Carolina was canceled due to Hurricane Florence, Milton exploded for six touchdowns against Florida Atlantic. Milton threw for 306 yards and three scores and ran in the other three touchdowns to beat the Owls, 56-36. This week, Pittsburgh comes to town.

N'Kosi Perry, Miami

Canes fans have felt a bit stale with Malik Rosier as their starting quarterback. Against Florida International last week, freshman N'Kosi Perry came in and gave the team a lift, throwing for 224 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Signs are pointing to Perry starting Thursday night's game against North Carolina, and another good showing could lock down this job for years to come.

Miles Sanders, Penn State

Miles Sanders, Penn State
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Could Miles Sanders be the next Saquon Barkley? Well, that's a bit of a stretch, but he's been doing a bang-up job replacing him. Last week against Illinois, Sanders ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He's ran for at least 86 yards in each game this season and has taken a ton of the offensive load off Trace McSorley's shoulders. He'll need to be big as Ohio State comes to town this week.

13 of 15

Benny Snell Jr., Kentucky

Benny Snell Jr., Kentucky
Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

Snell is having a season worthy of some Heisman love. Last week against Mississippi State, Snell blew up for 165 yards and four touchdowns, including a couple of back-breaking scores. He's been under the radar nationally due to Kentucky's standing in college football, but he's well-known as a beast in the SEC. He has scored in both games he's played against South Carolina, the Wildcats' opponent this weekend.

14 of 15

J.J. Taylor, Arizona

J.J. Taylor, Arizona
Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona has struggled to get its offense going this season, but Taylor found a great time to explode. Taylor ran for 284 yards and two touchdowns against Oregon State last weekend, and those two scores were electrifying as they went for 40 and 62 yards. The Wildcats welcome USC to Tucson this weekend and if Arizona sticks with its running attack, Taylor could be in for another big day.

Michael Warren II, Cincinnati

Michael Warren II, Cincinnati
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati is quietly having a solid season. Running back Michael Warren II has stepped up with a solid sophomore season. He's already surpassed his totals of all of last season with 435 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Late in last weekend's game against Ohio, Warren's 3-yard run gave the Bearcats the lead and the win. Cincy heads up to UConn this week.
