Takeaways as Alabama wins SEC title and sends CFP into chaos

Thanks to their 27-24 win over No. 1 Georgia in the SEC title game on Saturday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide have thrown the College Football Playoffs into chaos. Here are three takeaways on Alabama's win and the potential aftermath.

1) Is this win enough for Alabama to get in?

Alabama, which entered the game at No. 8 in the latest ranking, already had a strong resume and what it thought was going to be a good argument for a spot in the top four. But by beating top-ranked Georgia and winning the SEC, it might have what it thinks is a lock on a playoff position.

The Crimson Tide have just one loss on the season, have several strong wins, and just beat the best team in the country on a neutral field. With Ohio State being idle and Oregon losing to Washington on Friday that is two teams that Alabama will have an argument for jumping over, and now it has the head to head win over Georgia.

Whether it is enough for the committee remains to be seen, but the argument is going to be strong and the reaction if Alabama doesn't get in will be intense.

2) Will the SEC get shut out of the playoffs?

This is the potential nuclear option in all of this.

Could Georgia's loss potentially keep the Bulldogs out entirely?

It would be unprecedented for a top ranked team in the final rankings the week before the field is announced to not make the playoffs, but given the resumes for Washington, Michigan, Texas, Alabama and, yes, even Ohio State that door has to at least be kept open.

There is at least the possibility that Michigan, Texas, Washington, Florida State or Ohio State get a nod over them.

Given Georgia's success the past two years — and this season — and the dominance of the SEC that thought would have been lunacy as recently as week ago. But Texas' win, Florida State entering the week at No. 4 and Alabama's win has changed everything.

3) Never count out Nick Saban

Two weeks into the season it looked Alabama's run at the top of the country was finished, mainly due to an unsettled quarterback situation. But as the season went on Jalen Milroe took command of the position and Saban's defense took over to help put Alabama right back into a position where it at least has a strong case for a playoff spot.

As long as Saban is there you can never count out the Tide.
