TCU Football: Week Six Killer Frogs Player of the Week

Midway through the third quarter of TCU's 27-14 loss to Iowa State, Chandler Morris was injured after a three-yard run. The injury has been reported as an MCL injury, and while the severity is unknown, it is expected that he is going to miss a lot of time. The MCL injury happened on the same knee that kept him on the sidelines last season, before Max Duggan took over the starting quarterback job full-time.

Morris finished his shortened stint in the ugly loss with 94 yards on 10/16 passing, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He and the Horned Frogs offense picked up right where it left off against West Virginia, which for many reasons, is a really bad sign.

With Morris out for what is believed to be multiple weeks, redshirt freshman Josh Hoover is the next man up. Hoover played just about a quarter-and-a-half and was efficient in that time. He threw for 119 yards on 11/19 passing and also added a touchdown and an interception. For coming into the game when he did, and being as efficient as he was, Hoover is our the Week Six KillerFrogs Player of the Week.

The only encouraging thing to come out of the Horned Frogs' ugly loss was Josh Hoover and the way the offense looked with him on the field. With Hoover at the helm, the team looked the best it's looked since the first half of the West Virginia game.

The 6'1", 196-lb signal-caller was a three-star recruit in the 2022 cycle, ranked as the 710th player in the country and the 41st quarterback in the country. He hails from Rockwall-Heath, where he threw for 9,953 yards and 108 touchdowns in his three seasons at the helm. Hoover scored 40 touchdowns in his senior season and was given the 2021 Landry Award, an honor given to the top high school player in North Texas. Notable players such as Kyler Murray, Myles Garrett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and TCU's own JoJo Earle.

Things are pretty bleak for Sonny Dykes and his Horned Frogs. The offense, defense, and special teams all look lost, and whether or not that can be fixed remains to be seen. But the young Hoover has an opportunity to provide a spark and will TCU to a bowl birth. Fans love winning, but in my time watching football I have come to realize that fans also love the idea of seeing what a young quarterback can do. Hoover showed that he is capable against Iowa State and will get a chance to do it again in his first career start against BYU on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
