Tennessee Vols HC Josh Heupel endorses a major change for college football

Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel endorsed what would be a major change for college football during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone's 3HL on Tuesday.

Heupel, who was in Nashville for Tennessee's Big Orange Caravan stop, was asked by 3HL co-host (and former Vols hoops standout) Ron Slay if things are "slowing down" after completing his third season as UT's head coach.

The former Oklahoma quarterback was quick to point out that it's been quite the opposite, at least off the field, thanks to a college football calendar that doesn't provide much rest for already-overworked coaches.

"The game of college football, from my chair, all of the moving parts, it's not slowing down," said Heupel. "I think it's getting faster and longer. It's getting harder. And I'm just talking about the actual calendar itself."

When asked if there's a fix for the never-ending calendar and moving parts, Heupel didn't hesitate to offer a solution.

"Yes, at some point, somebody grabbing the reigns," said Heupel. "You gotta have one voice. Somebody that's....the commissioner."

It's beyond obvious that the sport needs a commissioner. It wouldn't be an automatic fix for all of the chaos that the sport is currently experiencing, but it would certainly give college football a legitimate chance to put some much-needed structure in place.

Without a commissioner, it's just athletic directors and conference commissioners arguing with each other and TV networks about where the sport should go.

Eventually, a commissioner who oversees the sport will likely be put in place. But how long until that happens? And how much damage will be done to the sport before it happens?

Heupel is far from the first to endorse the idea of a commissioner for college football.

At this point, why wait? College football will just continue to dive further into chaos until a commissioner is appointed.
