Billie Eilish jokes the Met Gala is just 'famous people famous peopling': 'It's nuts'

Billie Eilish attended her first Met Gala in September, and she still isn't quite sure how she ended up there.

On Monday's (Dec. 13) The Howard Stern Show, the seven-time Grammy winner agreed with Stern that she doesn't seem like "a Met Gala kind of person," and then helped Stern understand what the annual fundraising and fashion event actually is.

"It's nuts. It's famous people famous peopling. That's what it is," the 19-year-old joked.

Eilish later added:

"I hear, 'Billie!' I turn around, and it's Frank Ocean. I mean, what the f—k is that? What the f—k is he doing there? He's Frank Ocean. But then you turn around, and it's like, oh, Kid Cudi. And then, oh, you know, everybody else. [Laughs] The main thing that night made me think or feel was how famous people are just literally nobodies. I mean, just nobodies. Just randos. And it's so weird. I was like, 'Wow, all these people are just somebody who's in class with you, and you think you person is kind of annoying; you really like this person. You get along with this person.' Everybody is just embarrassed and insecure about what they're doing and saying."

Eilish emphasized that the night "was amazing" and "beautiful," and the best part was being surrounded by her peers who weren't shoving a phone in her face or trying to sneakily take a photo of her. "That is really relieving," she explained. "That's my problem with the world is no matter what's going on or where you are, people shove that phone in your face. I have a real problem with the phones."

The Happier Than Ever star donned a gorgeous peach gown from Oscar de la Renta, but she agreed to wear it only under the condition the designer agreed to have his brand "be completely fur-free" moving forward.
