Bob Odenkirk doesn't know how 'Better Call Saul' ends: 'I want to be surprised'

Bob Odenkirk and his Better Call Saul co-stars and crew are gearing up to film the series' sixth and final season. Production was supposed to begin last September, the 58-year-old told A.V. Club's "Push the Envelope" podcast, but the COVID-related delay didn't change his approach to the script.

"I haven’t read it," Odenkirk said. "I could read it. I’m a producer. I could say, 'Give me the scripts.' They offer them to me all right, but I don’t want to know. I want to just enjoy it like an audience member. When I get a script and when I read it, I want to be surprised, in the right way. I want to learn what I learned or my character learns as he learns it. I don’t want to be ahead of it. I don’t want to be playing where the story is going because I don’t know where it’s going."

Better Call Saul is the spinoff and prequel of the critically acclaimed AMC series Breaking Bad, which centered around Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) as they run a meth lab. Eventually, they consult the services of Saul Goodman (Odenkirk), and Better Call Saul explores the characters life in the years before then as Jimmy McGill. Both series were created by Vince Gilligan.

As for Season 6's arc, there is an element of predictability because audiences know what's to come in Breaking Bad, but there is still plenty unknown.

"I don’t know what happens next," Odenkirk said. "Where he is at the end of season five is a guy who is trying to find his feet again. He’s scared and he’s wobbly."

Better Call Saul is nearing its end, but it still isn't the end for the character:

Odenkirk is nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award at April 4's show.
