Britney Spears has choice words about cringeworthy 2003 Diane Sawyer interview

To call Diane Sawyer's 2003 "ABC Primetime" interview with Britney Spears an interview doesn't feel accurate, considering the veteran broadcast journalist interrogated a then-21-year-old Spears over the course of 42 cringeworthy minutes.

Spears, 40, finally addressed the controversial sit-down in a since-deleted Instagram post Monday that was screenshotted and can be seen below.

In the post, Spears wrote about how she has been "sneaking over to the mall to shop" lately, which led her to Sawyer.

"Dare we forget the Diane Sawyer interview in my apartment almost 20 years ago??? What was with the 'you're in the wrong' approach ?? Geeze ... and making me cry ??? Seriously though ... I lived in my apartment for a year and never spoke to anyone ... my manager put that woman in my home and made me talk to her on national television and she asked me if I had a shopping problem !!! When did I have a problem with shopping ??? When I never left my apartment ??? Something I never shared when I had that big break up years ago was that I couldn't talk afterwards ... I never spoke to anyone for a very long time ... I was in shock ... pretty lame of my dad and three men to show up at my door when I could hardly speak ... two days later they put Diane Sawyer in my living room ... they forced me to talk !!! I was a baby ... I was almost 22 and didn't understand ... but I f—king know now !!! She said 'a woman or a girl' ... I would like to say now 'ma'am I'm a catholic slut !!! You wanna join me at a mass and I can serve your husband my certificate on shopping for anonymous players???' I should spend a thousand dollars if I want every day of my life and she can kiss my white a--"

The interview came after the breakup between Spears and Justin Timberlake that rocked pop culture in early 2002. Sawyer pressed Spears on the circumstances of their split, insinuating over and over again that Spears was at fault and "broke his heart; you did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering."

Even worse, Sawyer prodded into Spears' sex life with Timberlake — more or less crucifying her for not staying true to her previous public proclamation that she wanted to remain a virgin until marriage.

The now-75-year-old also accused Spears of setting a poor example for young girls — citing magazine covers and kissing Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards — and casually excused Kendel Ehrlich for saying, "If I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, I think I would" earlier that year because, Sawyer said, "of the example [Spears was setting] for kids and how hard it is to be a parent and keep all of this away from your kids."

Jamie Spears, Britney's father, denied involvement in the Sawyer interview in a statement to People through his lawyer, Alex Weingarten:

"Mr. Spears has no idea what Ms. Spears is talking about. Jamie never set up any interview with Diane Sawyer and was not present for any such interview. He had nothing to do with Britney's career at this point and was completely uninvolved in this interview. Jamie loves Britney very much, wishes Britney nothing but the best and hopes that she continues to seek the help that she needs to stay safe and healthy."

The Grammy winner's controversial conservatorship was terminated by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny on Nov. 12. After 13 years, she finally has sole control of her estate and person.
