The Emmy-winning actress and comedian announced her stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis Monday morning (Aug. 2) and then underwent successful surgery to "have half of my left lung removed" by that afternoon:

Later that night, Griffin's Nightline episode aired—in which the 60-year-old was extremely candid and vulnerable about developing a pill addiction after her 2017 Trump controversy and subsequent suicide attempt last year:

Griffin detailed to Nightline anchor Juju Chang that the mass on her lung had been there "for a long time" and has been X-rayed every three years without any growth until recently when it doubled in size.
"The irony is not lost on me that, a little over a year ago, all I wanted to do was die," she told Chang. "And now, all I wanna do is live."
