Matthew Perry calls off six-month engagement: 'I wish Molly the best'

With Friends: The Reunion releasing last Thursday, any chatter about Matthew Perry's love life in the last week has centered around Chandler and Monica.

However, Perry confirmed to People on Tuesday (June 1) that he has split from 29-year-old literary agent Molly Hurwitz after getting engaged last November.

"Sometimes things just don't work out," Perry, 51, told People, "and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best."

The couple had been dating since 2018.

During Friends: The Reunion, which filmed in early April, and the promotion around it prompted fans to speculate about Perry's appearance and health. Perry has been open about his past substance abuse struggles.

Ben Winston, the director, swiftly shut it all down last week while appearing on The Hollywood Reporter's "TV's Top 5" podcast.

"He was great," Winston said. "I think people can sometimes just be a little bit unkind, and I wish they weren't. You know, he was great. I loved working with him. I think he's a brilliantly funny man."

Friends ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004. The series ended with Chandler (Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox) welcoming two twins from a surrogate mother (Anna Faris), Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) finally coming back to each other, and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) blissfully married to Mike (Paul Rudd) and planning to start a family. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) was just pleased to have his own room at Monica and Chandler's new home outside of New York City.

Friends: The Reunion marked just the second time—the first being a private dinner at Aniston's home—all six core members had been together at once since Friends wrapped.

The one-hour-and-45-minute special is available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
