Meryl Streep didn't understand why Jonah Hill kept calling her a 'GOAT'

Meryl Streep is largely regarded as the greatest of all time as far as acting is concerned, but the three-time Oscar winner is just now learning what it means when someone calls her the GOAT.

"We've been doing press for this movie," Jonah Hill said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, referring to the forthcoming Netflix sci-fi dramedy Don't Look Up. "In the interviews the past couple days, I keep saying, 'Oh, and getting to work with Meryl, she's the GOAT. She's the GOAT,' which if you know, stands for greatest of all time. That's an acronym you use for, like, Michael Jordan or JAY-Z or whoever your GOAT is for whatever you're into. Meryl, to me, is the GOAT."

The 37-year-old actor and filmmaker continued:

"So, the whole week I'm saying, 'Working with Meryl is the best. She's the GOAT. She's the GOAT.' And then today, we're doing a press conference, and she's like, 'You know, Jonah is so comfortable with me, he's been calling me a goat all week.' I'm like, 'What the f—k?!' Jennifer Lawrence explained [it] to her because she was telling Jennifer about this—and she's so cool, she wasn't even offended by it! She was just like, 'I guess he loves me and is calling me a goat.' Jennifer's like, 'No, Meryl, it stands for greatest of all time.' So [Streep] is like, 'Hey, thanks for calling me the GOAT. I thought you were calling me a goat this whole time!'"

At the Don't Look Up world premiere in New York City on Sunday night (Dec. 5), Streep showed affection toward Hill by jokingly calling him "annoying" because he made her laugh so much that she "ruin a lot of takes" while filming:

In Don't Look Up, Streep plays President Janie Orlean and Hill is her son, Jason Orlean, the chief of staff. They are approached by two astronomers, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), after they've discovered a life-destroying comet headed for Earth, and they greet them with indifferent mocking.

With Fallon, Hill described his character as a "spoiled, rich kid," and he pulled inspiration from "a high-up political figure who perhaps inappropriately sexualized his daughter; I'm not gonna name names," and "thought it would be interesting to play on that as to inappropriately sexualize my mother in the role."

More simply, Hill wanted Jason to be "if Fyre Festival was a person."

The movie will debut in select theaters Friday (Dec. 10) and then begin streaming on Netflix on Dec. 24. Watch the trailer below.
