Our 25 favorite celebrity stoners

Our 25 favorite celebrity stoners

On May 24, comedian Tommy Chong will celebrate his 80th birthday. Based on his longtime and continued support of smoking and legalizing marijuana for both medicinal and recreation purposes, we’re sure his birthday party will be quite the rager. That got us thinking: if Chong were to make a guest list based on other famous faces who regularly blaze bud, what might it look like? Or better yet, what do we hope it would look like? So, in honor of one of the biggest potheads of all time (and our favorite member of Cheech & Chong — sorry Cheech!) here are our 25 favorite celebrity stoners.

B-Real

With song titles like “I Want to Get High,” “Hits from the Bong,” “Dr. Greenthumb,” and “Reefer Man,” we’re pretty confident that all of Cypress Hill enjoys their ganja, but let’s be real, the most recognizable stoner of the group is frontman B-Real. It addition to the lyrics he writes and the pot-leaf adorned gear he regularly rocks, the dude also has his own weed-based talk show called “The Smokebox,” where he hotboxes a car with his guests.

Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong

Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong

Of course this list has to include not just Tommy Chong, but also his longtime comedic partner, Cheech Marin. The duo formed their act in the early ‘70s and gained notoriety for their stand-up act and comedy records before releasing their first film, “Up in Smoke,” in 1978, as well as the sequels “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie” (1980), “Nice Dreams” (1981), “Things are Tough All Over” (1982), and “Still Smokin” (1983). The two began developing their solo careers in the late ‘80s, but still regularly appear and perform together. Cheech and Chong recently announced they are moving away from marijuana-based humor due to its decreasing stigma, but given the fact that they’re longtime stoners, we think they were just having a laugh.

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle

When Dave Chappelle made his return to full-time touring in 2013, we were happy not just because he’s one of our favorite comedians, but also because he’s one of our favorite stoners. Chappelle has worked weed into his routine countless times over the years (including a famous bit about how he’ll no longer smoke with black people, as they only use the event as an opportunity to vent about negative topics) and he also co-wrote and starred in one of the most popular stoner comedies of all time, 1998’s “Half Baked.”

Doug Benson

Doug Benson

Doug Benson might be the most active figure in the stoner community. In addition to stand-up sets chock full of marijuana humor, he released a documentary in 2007 called “Super High Me,” where he constantly smoked weed for 30 days after abstaining for 30 days; he hosts a web series called “Getting Doug with High,” which is basically a talk show where he and the guests smoke during their extended interviews; and he even made a weed-based reality courtroom show in which he tokes up before judging real cases, called “The High Court.” Our verdict? Doug Benson is a true king of cannabis.

Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson

Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson

Although you can now see Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson in solo roles, we still think of them as a package deal thanks to four seasons (and counting!) of Comedy Central’s “Broad City.” In the show, Ilana and Abbi deal with life in New York City while simply trying to get by and stay high. The affinity for smoking isn’t just part of their roles, as the duo co-write the series based on their real-life personalities, friendship, and experiences, and they even appeared on an episode of “Getting Doug with High.”

The Lucas Brothers (Keith and Kenny Lucas)

We were first introduced to the Lucas Brothers through their chronically underrated Animation Domination cartoon, “Lucas Bros. Moving Co.” In the show, identical twins Kenny and Keith (or Keef, in an obvious weed reference) run a moving company while smoking, gaming, and basically avoiding work as much as possible, with some wild adventures and guest appearances by wrestling legend Jake “The Snake” Roberts... because why not? They can also be seen in the fourth season of “Arrested Development,” in the 2014 comedy “22 Jump Street,” and in their very own aptly titled 2017 Netflix stand-up special, “Lucas Brothers: On Drugs.”

Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith’s early films contained plenty of pot, especially via the characters Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), but the filmmaker/actor actually didn’t start smoking weed until age 38 after working with Seth Rogen on the 2008 comedy “Zack & Miri Make a Porno.” He then became a self-proclaimed pothead and activist, and even used the herb to kick his cigarette-smoking habit. In February 2018, Smith had a massive heart attack, which he at first suspected was caused by weed. On the contrary, his doctor later informed him; the heart attack was due to a total blockage of an artery, and being high may have actually saved him, as it allowed Smith to stay calm while being attended to by medical personnel.

Lil Wayne

Between the countless song titles and lyrics that reference weed and numerous marijuana possession busts, do you really need any more proof that Lil Wayne is a total pothead? If so, allow us to point out the time in 2016 when he headlined the High Times Cannabis Concentrates Cup Show, which he kicked off by lighting up a blunt on stage. Although perhaps he needed to take a few more puffs, because he walked out on the gig after just a few minutes because the crowd was reportedly too mellow for his liking.

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey was famously busted for suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation in 1999 after cops were called to his home based on reports of a man playing the bongos and dancing in the nude. That man, of course, was McConaughey himself. The charges were eventually dropped. We’re not sure if the “Dazed and Confused” actor still smokes — especially now that he’s married with three kids — but even if he doesn’t partake anymore, his legend will live on, and that’s alright alright alright with us.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has made no secret of her support of sinsemilla. In addition to her weed-based stage decor and attire, Cyrus has called marijuana “the best drug on earth” and said, “I love weed” and “I just love getting stoned.” She even sparked up a joint while accepting an award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards! Although Cyrus reportedly quit the herb in 2017, when asked if she’d ever pick it up again, Miley simply replied, “Never say never.”

Morgan Freeman

You might not expect a distinguished actor like Morgan Freeman to be a stoner, but the 80-year-old actor has actually been a legalization advocate for quite a while. His support intensified after he was in a serious car accident in 2008, which left him with a broken shoulder, arm and elbow, and his injuries subsequently required four hours of surgery to repair the nerve damage. Freeman still suffers from chronic pain, and uses medical marijuana to ease the symptoms. “I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it!” he told The Daily Beast in 2015. “I have fibromyalgia pain ... and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.”

Ricky Williams

We want to include at least one stoner athlete, so running back Ricky Williams gets the call. After being awarded the Heisman Trophy while playing at the University of Texas, Williams would go on to have a 12-year NFL career. However, he wasn’t exactly on the field the whole time. Ricky failed numerous drug tests for marijuana, retired, returned, served a suspension, failed another test, served a longer suspension and finished his career with four consecutive 16-game seasons. He was vocal about using cannabis to treat his anxiety, and earlier this year opened his own marijuana company called Real Wellness.

Rihanna

Listening to Rihanna’s songs or peeking at her Instagram page will reveal a world of weed, and that comes as no surprise to anybody. In addition to various photos of the Barbados-born singer smoking or donning pot-leaf-adorned clothing, she has famously rolled a blunt on her bodyguard’s head at Coachella and even dressed up as “the bride of Mary Jane” for Halloween. When asked about her cannabis use back in 2012, Rihanna replied with a lyric from Drake: “Kush rolled, glass full … I prefer the better things.”

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen

Is it even possible to name all of movies that feature Seth Rogen smoking or discussing weed? The list definitely includes classic comedies like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” “Pineapple Express,” “This Is the End,” “Neighbors” and “The Night Before,” and were certain he lights up in a few others too. Aside from blazing on the big-screen, Rogen makes no attempt to hide his affinity for the herb, as he is an outspoken cannabis advocate and has discussed all things green in numerous interviews. Even if he doesn’t win an award for best stoner, he should at least win one for the best stoner laugh. That chuckle alone gives us a contact high.

Snoop Dogg

A quick listen to almost any Snoop Dogg song will let you know that the man adores his herb, and as a card-carrying medical marijuana patient since 2007, rarely a photo is taken of the rapper in which he isn’t rocking a blunt or joint, or at least a pair of red, glassy eyes. He has also been busted numerous times for possession in various parts of the world, and in 2015 alone, he launched a marijuana-focused digital media business (Merry Jane), invested in a cannabis delivery service (Eaze), and released his own brand of weed products (Leafs by Snoop). You might say pot is his trademark.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson is the Godfather of Grass, the Emperor of Indo and the Ruler of All Reefer. The outlaw country musician says he started puffing at age 19 or 20, and still partakes daily at 85. But he doesn’t just smoke it, he vocally supports it. Nelson is a legalization advocate, he’s co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws’ (NORML) advisory board, he created the TeaPot political party, he wrote a book called “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” and he even established his own cannabis brand, called Willie’s Reserve.

Wiz Khalifa

We like to think that one day, when Snoop Dogg retires as the mosting blazingest rapper, he will pass the torch (no pun intended) to Wiz Khalifa. He already rarely performs without being surrounded by a cloud of smoke, reportedly toking daily and burning through $10,000 worth of weed each month at one point. Although he still partakes each day, his dope is now free thanks to The Cookie Company, a medical marijuana dispensary that sells a strain he personally developed called Khalifa Kush. Look for Wiz this summer on one of the just-announced dates for his Blazed & Dazed Tour!

Woody Harrelson

After years of advocacy for the legalization of marijuana and hemp (including an arrest for symbolically planting four hemp seeds in Kentucky), news broke last year that Woody Harrelson had quit smoking weed. Although his abstinence lasted for two years, Harrelson recently admitted that he had re-ignited his old pastime thanks to none other than Willie Nelson. After puffing on a vape pen during a poker game, Willie turned and said to him: “Welcome home, son.”

The Workaholics (Adam DeVine, Blake Anderson, and Anders Holm)

The Workaholics (Adam DeVine, Blake Anderson, and Anders Holm)

Every single one of the 86 episodes of “Workaholics” featured weed in some regard, not only because the characters Adam, Blake and Anders (Adam DeVine, Blake Anderson and Anders Holm) smoke on the show, but also because a burning bowl can be seen in the show’s introduction. Outside of the since-ended series, the trio has appeared on “Getting Doug with High” to rep their stoner cred, and originally planned to release their new movie, “Game Over, Man!” on 4/20.

Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis might not be the first name you think of when you think of celebrity stoners (unless you saw him in “Due Date,” that is), but he’s actually a pretty big pothead. Galifianakis has been smoking for a long time, he told a Rolling Stone journalist in 2010 while ingesting some pot chocolates. That same year, he famously sparked up a reportedly real joint while discussing California’s Prop 19 on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” In addition to eating and smoking it, we’ve also heard Galifianakis is a big fan of tinctures, an alcoholic extract of cannabis.
