Report: Dakota Johnson to make history and play Madame Web for Sony

Sony has reportedly identified the first-ever female superhero for its Marvel universe.

Reported exclusively by Deadline , Dakota Johnson "is in talks" to portray Madame Web for an upcoming Madame Web movie from Sony Pictures set to be directed by S.J. Clarkson.

Justin Kroll provided more context:

"In the comics, Madame Web is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders say due to her psychic sensory powers, she is essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.

"Either way, getting a female-driven property in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters has always been a top priority for studio brass given the long list of strong female characters that appear in these comics throughout the years. Sony execs have taken their time in figuring out who would land the title role, meeting with a number of A-listers. In the last two months, the list has been cut down, with Johnson gaining front-runner status right before the holiday."

Johnson is currently starring in "The Lost Daughter" and "Am I OK?"

The 32-year-old actress surged to mainstream fame by fronting the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy from 2015-18.

"I think it’s really smart when actors who reach that level of ubiquity and could springboard into more conventional, mainstream success stay disciplined about working with quality directors," MGM movie chairman Michael De Luca said of Johnson for this November The Hollywood Reporter profile. "Dakota has been really smart about making sure she’s always aligned with quality directors. Then, everything's at your disposal — commercial movies, interesting and provocative indie films. Now she can have it all."
