The 20 best Hulu original shows

Streaming platforms' original content can be hit or miss these days, and while not every series can be a winner, here are 20 original Hulu shows to put on your list.

'Difficult People' (2015-2017)

'Difficult People' (2015-2017)
Hulu

Hulu's first dark comedy series, Difficult People, was very underrated. Creator Julie Klausner stars alongside Billy Eichner as two friends and struggling comedians in their 30s who don't seem to like anyone but themselves. If you are a close follower of entertainment and pop culture and also love to laugh, you will appreciate this show.

'Letterkenny' (2016-)

'Letterkenny' (2016-)
Hulu

Letterkenny has been somewhat of a hidden gem, but it is arguably one of the best shows on Hulu. The series follows Wayne, his sister, Katy, and friends Daryl and Dan and their everyday lives in their small town in Canada. This show is delightfully weird, super funny, and incredibly addicting. If you want to keep the party going, check out the spinoff miniseries, Shoresy.

'The Handmaid's Tale' (2017-)

'The Handmaid's Tale' (2017-)
Hulu

One of the more popular Hulu originals, The Handmaid's Tale, is a great adaptation of the Margaret Atwood novel. With every new episode, this series will have you on the edge of your seat. Honestly, you'll hate how much you'll love it. Elisabeth Moss as June, or "Offred," is easily one of her best roles to date.

Marvel's 'Runaways' (2017-2019)

Marvel's 'Runaways' (2017-2019)
Hulu

For Marvel fans, this show is a must-watch. Runaways focuses on the teenagers of a group of supervillains who, when they find out their secret, leave home and try to right their parents' wrongdoings. The series got a whole three seasons and ended on somewhat of a high note, but it probably could have had another season instead of rushing to wrap things up.

'PEN15' (2019-2021)

'PEN15' (2019-2021)
IMDb

PEN15 is an incredibly accurate and hilarious recollection of what it was like to be in middle school in the year 2000. The series stars its creators, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, as seventh-grade versions of themselves handling life as outcasts. Not only is it funny to have 30-year-old women portray their teenage selves, but you get to relive some of that early 2000s nostalgia, no matter how cringe-worthy. 10/10.

'Ramy' (2019-)

'Ramy' (2019-)
Hulu

Ramy, created by and stars Ramy Youssef, follows a young man on his spiritual journey, trying to balance life as a millennial in New Jersey while being in a Muslim community. It's relatable for anyone going through a spiritual journey, who may also attempt to navigate their place in their religious community or the world.

'Dollface' (2019-2022)

'Dollface' (2019-2022)
Hulu

The critics definitely seemed to have some opinions on this show, especially in season two, but I found it relatable and fun. Dollface had a good story with a lot of heart, and the surreal elements only added to its greatness. As a fan of Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, and Shay Mitchell, I can't wait to see what is next for this cast!

'Shrill' (2019-2021)

'Shrill' (2019-2021)
Hulu

Speaking of relatable, there's Dollface, and then there's Shrill. While I enjoyed the girls' friendship and the challenges that came with it, this series just gave a bit more, specifically with juggling very real issues while trying to be comfortable in your skin. It's funny that the main character uses humor to deal with the awkward situations that come her way, but by the end, she has become more accepting of who she is and is on her way to changing her life for the better.

'The Great' (2020-)

'The Great' (2020-)
Hulu

The Great  is just that: great. Very loosely based on Catherine the Great's rise to power and described as "anti-historical," the series is super funny and entertaining. Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult were perfectly cast as Catherine and Emperor Peter III, and I cannot wait for more seasons. Huzzah!

'Woke' (2020-2022)

'Woke' (2020-2022)
IMDb

Woke is one of Hulu's more interesting original series, for sure. Though some viewers weren't necessarily sure what point the show was trying to get across at times, the story of cartoonist Keef Knight (based on the work of Keith Knight) and his sudden ability to see and hear inanimate objects is enough to keep audiences engaged.

'Little Fire Everywhere' (2020)

'Little Fire Everywhere' (2020)
Hulu

As someone who never read the novel by Celeste Ng (despite having it on her bookshelf at home), I thought Little Fires Everywhere made for a great miniseries. Set in Ohio in the late 1990s, the story follows two families whose children bring them together. Even if it didn't go deep enough into the subject matter, the performances by both Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon make it worth watching.

'Y: The Last Man' (2021)

'Y: The Last Man' (2021)
Hulu

I want justice for Y: The Last Man getting canceled! I still wonder where this series would have gone if given another season or two. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the Y chromosome has somehow died out, except for Yorick, the only surviving male human, and his pet monkey. Again, I had no basis for how the story should have gone since I had not read the comic book series it was based on, but I enjoyed it regardless.

'Nine Perfect Strangers' (2021-2022)

'Nine Perfect Strangers' (2021-2022)
Hulu

Oh, look, another book I didn't read, but that is what Hulu is for. We know Hulu loves a miniseries, and Nine Perfect Strangers delivered. The series follows, you guessed it, nine strangers and their transformation over the course of 10 days at a health and wellness resort. They are all there for many different reasons. Many critics and audience members agree that there were a lot of wasted opportunities with this series, and although I agree, I was still engaged until the very end.

'Only Murders in the Building' (2021-)

'Only Murders in the Building' (2021-)
Hulu

Only Murders in the Building is one of the best series on this list and just keeps getting better. If Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez weren't enough to keep you watching, the incredibly talented guest stars will. The premise is already so unique, with the three crime podcast fans banding together to solve the murders in their building. However, adding two comedy icons plus Gomez to appeal to the younger generations makes it absolutely perfect.

'How I Met Your Father' (2022-)

'How I Met Your Father' (2022-)
Hulu

How I Met Your Father may not be the best thing ever to hit Hulu, but it certainly is one of its more popular shows. Let's be honest here: probably only real How I Met Your Mother (2005) fans watch the spinoff series. The jokes don't quite land one hundred percent of the time, but it has its moments, and the cameos are fun. In a perfect world, the Lizzie McGuire reboot would have happened, and the pilot for How I Met Your Dad (2014) wouldn't have failed, but I'll still watch.

'The Bear' (2022-)

'The Bear' (2022-)
Hulu

The Bear seemed to be the only show people were talking about last year, and for a good reason. The dramedy stars Jeremey Allen White (Shameless) as a talented young chef who returns to Chicago to run the family sandwich shop following his brother taking his own life. The acting is on point, specifically by White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Girls). The story perfectly captures the chaos of working in a kitchen and running a business while trying to deal with issues in your personal life. It is safe to say that fans cannot wait until season 2!

'Reboot' (2022)

'Reboot' (2022)
Reelgood

Yet another series was canceled too soon! Reboot was absolutely genius and incredibly relatable for those who work in the entertainment industry. Since we are currently in the "reboot" era, this show couldn't have come at a better time. The story follows the cast of a successful 2000s sitcom who, once they agree to return for a reboot of their show, must learn how to work in this new environment. Reboot's wonderful cast and story could have taken this show so many places.

'Life & Beth' (2022-)

'Life & Beth' (2022-)
Hulu

I love Life & Beth and would honestly write for the show if given the opportunity. People have their opinions on Amy Schumer's comedy, and that's fine, but this series should be judged as its own thing apart from anything she's done previously. I think what fans appreciate most is seeing Schumer's more vulnerable side and being able to connect with its flawed and relatable characters. Its cast of talented comedians may also play a part in the show's success. Bring on season 2!

'Koala Man' (2023-)

'Koala Man' (2023-)
IMDb

Koala Man is the adult animated show I have been waiting for. An Australian father doubles as a superhero, aka Koala Man, snuffing out petty crime in his community. It is just as hilarious as it sounds, and although it premiered only a few months ago, it is wildly underrated. I have already begun rewatching the series, and I am probably considered an honorary Australian at this point. Also, Hugh freaking Jackman is in it.

'History of the World, Part II' (2023-)

'History of the World, Part II' (2023-)
Hulu

A sequel to the 1981 Mel Brooks film History of the World: Part I, Part II with a star-studded cast kills as a sketch series. Of course, not every joke will be everyone's cup of tea, but that's sketch comedy for you. Fans of comedians and executive producers Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, and, of course, Mel Brooks will appreciate this show.

Shelby Weimer, a Kansas City native, grew up watching way too many comedies and Saturday Night Live, inspiring her to build a career in comedy. When she isn’t writing sketches and pilot scripts, Shelby is always keeping up with the latest in entertainment, with reality TV and all things pop culture being her jam.
