The movies, shows, albums and tours we’re looking forward to in 2020

The movies, shows, albums and tours we’re looking forward to in 2020

When 2019 comes to a close, we shut the book on a whole decade. However, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves in looking at the 2020s; let’s just get a little ahead of ourselves. That is to say, let’s take a quick peek at what’s coming down the pike in 2020 on the entertainment front. We’ve found 10 movies, 10 TV shows, 10 albums and five tours planned for next year that we’re already excited for. Here they are. Mark your calendars accordingly.

“Bad Boys for Life”

“Bad Boys for Life”

It’s been a long wait since the last time we saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence jump into their cop characters from this series. “Bad Boys II” came out all the way back in 2003. Hopefully the wait will be worth it, and we get another over-the-top, insane action film like the one so loved by the characters in “Hot Fuzz.”

“Birds of Prey”

“Birds of Prey”

We left out the subtitle, “And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” but that helps give you a good idea of this movie's sensibilities. Yes, “Suicide Squad,” where we first saw Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, was a flop. We are cautiously optimistic that “Birds of Prey” will be better and perhaps even good.

“A Quiet Place: Part II”

“A Quiet Place: Part II”

“A Quiet Place” was a rare thing: a big hit movie not based on an established property. That’s the power of a simple, efficient horror movie premise. It seems like a bit of a cash grab to churn out a sequel, but maybe we will be pleasantly surprised and get another scary, tense thriller from John Krasinski.

“Black Widow”

“Black Widow”

Finally, Black Widow is getting her own movie. Scarlett Johansson has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since almost the beginning, and finally we get to see the former Russian spy and assassin in action. The trailer for this one dropped recently, and it looks like a thriller.

“Wonder Woman 1984”

“Wonder Woman 1984”

It’s not a hot take to say “Wonder Woman” is the only movie from the DC Universe that really works through and through. It is a legitimately good movie. It also takes place during World War I, which makes it quite interesting that the sequel’s time frame has been moved all the way to 1984.

“Top Gun: Maverick”

“Top Gun: Maverick”

Speaking of long-gestating sequels. “Top Gun” is an ‘80s action classic — the kind of movie they don’t make much of anymore. Hopefully there’s still a market for that style of film, or that the formula has been changed for this sequel. Tom Cruise, despite being a man in his ‘50s, is still playing a hot-shot fighter pilot. Hey, Cruise has shown he can still get it done as an action star many times over.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

Depending on where you look, this film may or may not have the “Afterlife” subtitle attached to it. All we know is that it’s sort of a sequel to the first two “Ghostbusters” movies — but also not. It comes in the wake of the inexplicably controversial “Ghostbusters” reboot with a female-centered cast. Hey, apparently we’re going to get to see Bill Murray as Peter Venkman. That’s worth checking out.

“Bill & Ted Face the Music”

“Bill & Ted Face the Music”

OK, 2020 is officially the year of surprising sequels. The last “Bill & Ted” movie came out in 1991. Back then, Keanu Reeves was still a fresh-faced burgeoning star. His role as Ted helped create his caricature as a dopey burnout. Many years later, Reeves and Alex Winter will be back in what is very much a labor of love for everybody involved. Wyld Stallyns live forever!

“Dune”

“Dune”

The first adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” by David Lynch is a fascinating fiasco. Finally, somebody had the audacity to give it a go again to try and make it work. The cast is truly impressive, featuring Timothee Chalamet and Oscar Isaac. Denis Villeneuve is directing. If they pull this off, it could be a new sci-fi blockbuster.

“West Side Story”

“West Side Story”

Yeah, it’s another remake, and this time of a Best Picture winner. However, it’s being directed by Steven Spielberg, which is going to raise eyebrows. Also, this time there will be more authenticity, as Spielberg has said that he would cast more Latino and Latina actors.

“Star Trek: Picard”

After being reborn on the big screen, “Star Trek” is also being reborn on the small screen, or maybe your computer screen. In addition to “Star Trek: Discovery,” there will now be “Star Trek: Picard.” Patrick Stewart is back as Jean-Luc Picard, 20 years after his last movie appearance. That alone makes this must see.

“High Fidelity”

“High Fidelity,” the movie starring John Cusack, is considered a classic by many, mostly the kind of person who likes to sit around making music-related lists. Now it’s being adapted as a TV show by Hulu. The lead role will be played by Zoe Kravitz. Funnily enough, her mother, Lisa Bonet, is in the original film.

“Duncanville”

We don’t know much about this upcoming animated show, but it has an impressive pedigree. It was co-created by Amy Poehler, who is a national treasure, and Mike and Julie Scully, both former “Simpsons” writers. Poehler is also providing a voice, alongside Rashida Jones. A “Parks and Recreation” reunion? Count us in!

“Katy Keene”

“Riverdale” is an inexplicably popular — and inexplicable sexy — take on the classic Archie comics. Its success has led to a CW spinoff in “Katy Keene.” The titular character is played by Lucy Hale, but Josie, of Josie and the Pussycats fame, is also part of the main quartet. If you like “Riverdale,” you’ll want to check out “Katy Keene."

“Snowpiercer”

“Snowpiercer” is an insane movie from the eccentric, talented director Bong Joon-ho. It’s about a train that travels around the world, never stopping, and all the people left alive in the world live on it. Somehow, it’s going to be a TV show now. If you decide to give it a chance, at least you know it won’t be pulled out from under you. Despite having not aired an episode yet, “Snowpiercer” was renewed by TNT for a second season.

“Untitled Tina Fey/Robert Carlock Project”

“Untitled Tina Fey/Robert Carlock Project”

This show doesn’t have a name yet. It doesn’t matter. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock are responsible for “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” Also, this show stars Ted Danson. Call it whatever you want. We’ll be watching.

“Hunters”

The Amazon Prime show about Nazi hunters in the ‘70s has a couple of things going for it that makes it feel quite intriguing. One, Jordan Peele is one of the producers. Two, it stars, among others, Al Pacino. Yes, Pacino is starring on an upcoming TV show. It’s time for the Pacino Renaissance, apparently.

“Run”

The information on “Run” is limited, but what we do know sounds promising. It’s called a “comedy thriller,” a rare combo, and it was created by Vicky Jones, a frequent collaborator of Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The erstwhile “Fleabag” star will have a role on the show, but doesn’t appear to be the star. Still, there’s a lot to like here.

“Muppets Now”

Last time there was a make a Muppets TV show, it was a mockumentary for adults. Honestly, it was pretty good, but people didn’t want to see Kermit, Fozzie, and the gang in that way. They will try again on “Muppets Now,” which will air on Disney+. That means it will be more family friendly, and it’s also being called an improvisational comedy series.

“Y”

It feels like an adaptation of the classic comic book series “Y: The Last Man” has been in the works forever. That’s kind of true, as FX announced it was starting to develop the show way back in 2015. Now, finally, “Y” is about to debut in 2020. One assumes there will be a lot of spectacle to this show.

Kesha

When Kesha burst onto the scene, she had a dollar sign in her name and was known for the song “Tik Tok.” Since then, she’s reinvented herself and has become much more critically accepted. Her last album, “Rainbow,” hit No. 1 in 2017, and she will try and replicate that with “High Road.”

Green Day

Green Day is still out there doing the whole punk thing, heading into a new decade. The band members aren’t scrappy youngsters right now; rather they are legends in their own time, and they have more to say evidently. The trio’s first album came out way back in 1990, and now, 30 years later, they are hitting us with “Father of All…” an album whose title we will not finish here. You can look it up for yourself.

Cardi B

Cardi B had an insane rise to fame. She went from an unknown to having the biggest hit in the world, “Bodak Yellow,” in 2017. Her first album, “Invasion of Privacy,” came out in 2018, and now she’s planning to drop her follow-up, reportedly called “Tiger Woods,” this year. Let’s see if Cardi B can build something sustainable or if she proves to be a (successful) flash in the pan.

Tennis

Do you like lo-fi indie pop that makes you feel like you’re chilling on the beach in the middle of summer? Then you should definitely check out the duo of Tennis, who dropped their drummer in 2015 but still has a lush sound. That will presumably be true of “Swimmer,” which will give you some warm vibes when it comes out in February.

Tame Impala

It’s been a long wait for fans of Kevin Parker’s psych rock outfit. Tame Impala’s breakout album, “Currents,” came out back in 2015. In the world of music, five years feels like a lifetime waiting for something new. Well, finally, the wait is about to be over. “The Slow Rush,” Tame Impala’s fourth album, drops on Valentine’s Day.

Haim

There was a time when the sister trio of Haim was in the zeitgeist. Their first album, “Days Are Gone,” put them on the map back in 2013. Haim’s second album was also successful, but didn’t quite seem to resonate as strongly. That means it’s been almost seven years since Haim’s big break. No official album has been announced yet, but the band has been releasing singles in 2019, presumably building to something.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s next album will be her first since her turn in “A Star is Born.” Will it be coming in 2020? That’s what the rumors say. We do know she is working on her sixth album. We also know that she has said that she’s going to call it “Adele.” If that’s true, that would be a delight.

Migos

One of the members of Migos, Offset, used to be in a relationship with Cardi B, so 2020 could be a big year for that former couple. You can probably bet on Migos. The trio's 2017 album, “Culture,” went platinum. “Culture II” went double platinum in 2018. Now, in 2020, we await the drop of “Culture III.”

Grimes

With all the weird stories about Grimes, especially related to Elon Musk, sometimes it’s hard to remember that Grimes is a really talented musician. In 2020, we may get our reminder. The album is called “Miss Anthropocene.” It seems like it’s right up Grimes’ alley, as it’s apparently something of a concept album about a “goddess of climate change.”

Lana Del Rey

There’s no rest for Lana Del Rey. She just had an album come out in 2019, which was received well by critics and music fans. Also, the album is called “Norman F***ing Rockwell!” What will be the title of her new album? We don’t know just yet, but it will be interesting to find out.

Elton John

All five tours we are including on this list are legacy acts. They are the ones who tend to announce massive tours ahead of time and the ones that get the most people excited. John is technically in the middle of his three-year retirement tour. However, it is culminating in 2020, so if you haven’t seen him yet, you’re running out of time.

Taylor Swift

Swift’s last couple of albums have been less well received, but when you are a superstar, you can always turn to touring. That’s what Swift does basically every year, and apparently 2020 will beno different. Maybe she will do a song from “Cats.” We just hope she doesn’t dress up like her “Cats” character.

Eagles

We got a taste of the Eagles’ “Hotel California” tour with their three Las Vegas shows in 2019. However, the tour picks up in earnest in 2020. There are not a lot of stops, but all the arenas are massive, and they are mostly getting two or three shows per venue. The Eagles didn’t tour for a lot of years, and they may not have many more tours left in them.

Metallica

Unfortunately, Metallica’s tour plans have hit a bit of a snag recently. Frontman James Hetfield had to head to rehab, which changed some dates and canceled others. However, the band says it will make up those dates from Australia and New Zealand in 2020, plus keep its other tour dates hopefully.

Snoop Dogg

The legendary rapper has already been on a tour to support his latest album, “I Want to Thank Me.” However, Snoop has added multiple dates in 2020 as well. You may have to catch a date early in the year, in America at least. After the Doggfather is done touring the U.S, he’s heading to the U.K.
