'The Power of the Dog' leads Oscar nominations, followed by 'Dune'

The nominees for the 94th Academy Awards were unveiled Tuesday morning (Feb. 8), and leading the pack is The Power of the Dog with 12 nods.

The Power of the Dog was Jane Campion's first time directing a film since 2009's Bright Star, and she lands her second best director nomination—becoming the first woman to repeat in the category. Campion was first nominated for best director for 1993's The Piano, and she previously won an Oscar for the same picture under the best writing category.

The other 11 nominations from Power of the Dog include best actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, best supporting actress for Kirsten Dunst, and best supporting actor for Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Behind Dog is Dune with 10 nominations, followed by Belfast and West Side Story at seven as well as King Richard at six.

King Richard, also a best picture nominee, netted Will Smith his third best actor nomination—after Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness—though he has yet to win.

Many feel as if Lady Gaga was snubbed by not receiving a best actress nomination for her work in House of Gucci. Instead, the category is filled by Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos).

The 2022 Oscars will broadcast live Sunday, March 27, on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. EST.
