Legend and Icon Tina Turner Dead At 83

Tina Turner was an iconic singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor who saw colossal fame worldwide throughout her long career. She was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939.

Turner's singing career started in the '50s, but she rose to prominence in the '60s when she teamed up with Ike Turner. They went on to put out a number of hits like "Proud Mary" and "River Depp-Mountain High". Despite their commercial success, Tina Turner was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship with Ike Turner. She divorced him in 1978.

The '80s saw Tina Turner emerge as a superstar solo act. 1984's Private Dancer was her fifth solo album and first album since 1979's Love Explosion. It would go on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide and would be her best-selling album. She released her final studio album in 1999, Twenty Four Seven.

Tina Turner has appeared in movies and TV throughout her career as well. Her most notable role on screen for many was when she played Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). She also played the Mayor in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero (1993).

Turner garnered numerous accolades in her career, including 12 Grammy Awards and a Tony nomination for the musical based on her life and filled with her songs titled Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a duo with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo act in 2021.

Tina Turner's career was the stuff of legend. Not just because of her acclaim throughout, but her tenacity in re-building herself and her career.

Tina Turner died on May 24, 2023. Her cause of death was not known at the time of writing.
