The Czar of the Playbook, Emory Hunt, has spoken. Here's a quick Saints "Diamonds in the Rough" draft profile on wide receiver Michael Strachan from the University of Charleston, Division II.

Mike Jones of USA Today wrote, "WR Michael Strachan at his Pro Day today measured 6-5, 228 pounds, 85-inch wingspan, 10-inch hands, ran a 4.46 seconds 40-yard dash and put up 225 lbs weights 20 times." Monster measurables for this young player.

  • The young Golden Eagle draft prospect is from Freeport, Bahamas.
  • According to the university's website, in 2019, Strachan played in 11 games for the Golden Eagles, hauling in 19 touchdowns on 78 receptions for 1,319 yards.
  • Earned First Team All-MEC Honors.
  • Selected to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II All-American Second Team.
  • Earned D2CCA First Team All-Region honors.
  • 2019 Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-Super Region One First Team honoree.

NFL Draft expert and SNN contributor Mike Detillier wrote me on Strachan,

Route running needs work. Could be a flex TE with added muscle. Size mismatch with DB's downfield."

Strachan's size reminds me of Saints Hall of Fame wide receiver Marques Colston. Colston was New Orleans 7th round pick out of Hofstra University in 2006. Marques measured at 6-4, 225 lbs while with the Saints until 2015.

Colston became the Saints' #1 wide receiver after his rookie campaign. In 146 games and 10 seasons, Colston caught 711 passes for 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns with New Orleans. At the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine, Colston ran a 4.5 40-yard dash, benched 16 times, 10.25 feet broad jump, and 37-inch vertical jump.

New Orleans recently picked-up a 7th-round selection from Jacksonville Jaguars after trading defensive tackle Malcom Brown. Michael Strachan could become an undrafted free-agent prospect for New Orleans if they don't invest a pick him the young receiver.
