Angels New Pitching Coach Reveals Plan for Getting Tyler Anderson Back on Track
USA TODAY Sports

When the Los Angeles Angels signed left-handed starter Tyler Anderson last offseason, they were hoping that he could bring the success he saw in 2022 to their team. The Halos needed quality starting pitching help, and Anderson provided them with a solid option that didn't cost too much.

In 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Anderson was great. He posted an ERA of 2.57 over 30 games and had a WHIP of 1.00. It led to Anderson making his first-ever All-Star team and helped earn him a nice deal from the Halos.

However, Anderson regressed back to his pre-2022 ways and struggled mightily all season long. Over 27 games, he posted an ERA of 5.43 and a WHIP of 1.49.

Anderson is on the Angels books for two more seasons, and they are hoping for more production from him this coming year. New pitching coach Barry Enright spoke about his plan to get the veteran back on track in a conversation with Sam Blum of The Athletic.

"He’s going to be relying more on deception and everything looking the same. Playing front to back in his speed and getting back to what they did really well with the Dodgers in 2022. And chatting with him it seemed like he just kind of chased some pitch movement at times and got away from being himself. He took ownership and said that it frustrated him and said he wants to get away from it and wants to get back to just competing and pitching and the art of that."

If the team can get Anderson even somewhat back to his 2022 form, it would be seen as a victory. They need him to get back to the basics of what worked for him, and it would greatly benefit this starting rotation.

Anderson getting himself right this offseason is one of many parts of Enright's plan to help the Halos staff. He understands that without strong arms in the rotation, the Angels won't be going anywhere next season.
