Astros Could Sign This Slugging Catcher
Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

For the most part, the Houston Astros will look pretty much the same in 2024 as they did this past season.

Their stars are all under contract and only minor changes will take place throughout the roster, unless general manager Dana Brown is looking to make a splash.

That seems unlikely as of now and would go against what the Astros have done in the past when they make smaller additions to their team.

One of the biggest changes that is likely to occur will be Yainer Diaz becoming the full-time starting catcher in 2024.

Veteran Martin Maldonado is hitting free agency and the organization seems ready to turn things over to Diaz, who put together a solid rookie season.

A concern that could present itself about this transition is a defensive drop off from Maldonado to Diaz.

To address those concerns, Houston could pursue Yasmani Grandal in free agency to have another veteran to help Diaz.

The 34-year-old is not the same defensive presence that he used to be, recording one of his worst fielding seasons behind the plate in his career.

But, with Houston, he wouldn't be in the everyday role like he was with the Chicago White Sox.

His limited action behind the plate shouldn't present a problem as he would only be used to give Diaz a break.

What Grandal brings to the table is another slugging bat at the position, something that the Astros would lack if they brought back Maldonado.

Grandal finished the season with a slash line of .234/.309/.339, eight home runs and 33 RBI.

He's also a switch hitter, which gives them better matchups against pitchers depending on the situation.

Adding Grandal should solidify the catcher position for the 2024 season and give Diaz another veteran presence to learn from.
