Bartolo Colon Joins Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu & Francisco Rodríguez Among 2024 Baseball Hall Of Fame Finalists

The 2024 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot was released on Monday morning, and a pair of former Los Angeles Angels will be up for nomination to the sport’s highest honor. Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter, Francisco Rodríguez and Bartolo Colón are among 26 players on the ballot this year.

This is Abreu’s fifth time on the ballot. His first time in 2020, he received just 5.5% of the 75 required for induction. Last year, his fourth time on the ballot, he was up to 15.4%. He is unlikely to be inducted this season, but will have five more chances to make the Hall of Fame.

Abreu spent four of his 18 seasons with the Angels, compiling a .267/.364/.412 slash line with a .776 OPS. His best season in Anaheim was his first — 2009 — when he finished with an .825 OPS and helped lead the Angels to the ALCS, falling to the New York Yankees.

The four-year Angel is best known for his nine seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he also spent time with the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, New York Mets and L.A. Dodgers.

Hunter is perhaps the most prominent Angel on the ballot. He spent five seasons with the Angels, making two All-Star teams and winning two Gold Gloves between 2008 and 2012. He remains a more closely attached member of the Minnesota Twins, where he played 12 seasons.

Rodríguez spent the first seven years of his 16-season career with the Angels. As a reliever, he made three All-Star teams and was in the top four of Cy Young Award voting three times with the Angels. He won Reliever of the Year in 2006 and 2008, both in Anaheim.

Colon, meanwhile, is in his first season on the ballot and still has 10 years of Hall of Fame opportunities ahead of him. Colon is a four-time All-Star and the winner of the 2005 Cy Young Award while with the Angels. He also spent four seasons with Anaheim from 2004-07.

Colon is another journeyman, like Abreu, who spent time with 11 teams over the course of his 21-year career. He played for the Cleveland Indians for six seasons, the Angels for four, the Mets for three and the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox for two.

He played one season with the Twins, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos and Yankees.

Another player with the Angels in his history on the ballot is Brandon Phillips, who spent 24 games with the Angels in 2017 at the latter end of a 17-year career.
