Boston Red Sox Prospect Enmanuel Valdez Hits First Big League Home Run

The Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-5, on Monday night to begin the month of May off on the right foot.

The win moved the Sox to 16-14 on the season while the loss dropped the Jays to 18-11.

This was a wild, back-and-forth affair that saw the Red Sox blow a two-run, first inning lead, get the lead back, blow it again, and then ultimately win it on Alex Verudgo's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

But before Verdugo's heroics, there were the heroics of Red Sox prospect Enmanuel Valdez, who hit his first career home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With the two teams tied at 3-3, Valdez took Jays starter Jose Berrios deep to center field. You can watch the home run below:

Valdez was acquired at the trade deadline last year from the Houston Astros in the trade that sent Christian Vazquez to Houston. Known as a bat-first player, Valdez is up with the big club because of the injury to Yu Chang. The Sox' starting shortstop has a broken hamate bone and will be out up to two months.

In limited action since being called up, Valdez is hitting .333 in 24 at-bats. He's got the homer, three RBI and a stolen base. He has 80 career home runs in the minor leagues and is a .255 hitter.

According to reports after the game, Valdez was able to get the home run ball and is going to give it to his dad.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays will play again on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
