Braves provide update on Sean Murphy

The Atlanta Braves are off to a hot 7-3 start, sitting firmly in first place to begin the season, but it’s come at an unfortunate cost

Spencer Strider is currently on the 15-day IL. The Braves are calling it a UCL sprain for now, but all signs point towards Tommy John surgery for one of the best arms in all of baseball.

Sean Murphy is also on the IL for an injury that he suffered on Opening Day. It’s an oblique, and while the Braves expect him back this season, those are tricky injuries that can require significant time to heal.

The Braves provided an update on Murphy’s status. He’s now progressed to walking on the treadmill.

That goes to show how long oblique injuries can linger. He’s already been out for about two weeks and has just now progressed to walking.

The catcher position takes an immense physical toll on the body. Sean Murphy will have to be feeling 110% before the Braves even think of bringing him back. In the coming weeks, hopefully, he can progress to on-field activities before getting some work in behind the plate and taking batting practice, but it’s going to be a while before he’s back in action, especially if the Braves decide to give him some rehab starts in the minors.
