Could Astros See Surprise Reunion with Maldonado?

The Houston Astros and their fans have a ton of respect for Martin Maldonado. He has been the paragon for the franchise for much of the previous five seasons. Known for his defensive prowess behind the plate, he has made pitchers better and is one of the most prepared players at his position. 

That's why it was hard to see his decline, both offensively and defensively, last season. It was even harder to watch former manager Dusty Baker continue to select Maldonado as the starter over Yainer Diaz.

Once Baker retired, the odds of Maldonado returning to the team seemed low. What value could a 37-year-old on the decline provide the team?

Considering the above factors, Maldonado could still act as a capable backup and a great clubhouse presence. Something the Astros may be considering. 

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Houston could be in the mix to bring Maldonado back into the fold. 

"Free-agent catcher Martin Maldonado is drawing interest from five teams: The Angels, Astros, Padres, White Sox and Marlins," writes Nightengale. 

Of course, it would be within reason to believe that if Maldonado was brought back into the fold it would solely be as the backup to Diaz. Would Maldonado go for that?

He could potentially find more playing time elsewhere, but by all accounts has loved his time in Houston. Winning championships may be more important at this stage in his career than playing time. That is a factor the Astros can offer over the other four reportedly interested teams. 

A one-year deal that won't break the bank for Houston may just be enough to convince the team into a reunion for one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
