Cubs Add 1B Dominic Smith on Minor-League Deal
Reggie Hildred-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs were busy on Monday, but not in the way fans were hoping for. According to a combination of Joel Sherman of the New York Post and Robert Murray of FanSided, the Cubs are adding 1B Dominic Smith on a minor-league deal just minutes after reportedly inking OF David Peralta to a minor-league deal.

Smith has been connected to the Cubs more than once before. In fact, during the 2022 season, there were rumblings that the Cubs were interested in Smith around the 2022 MLB Trade deadline after struggling with the New York Mets. In 2023, Smith suited up in a career-high 153 games with the Washington Nationals.

With the Nats, Smith slashed a disappointing .254/.326/.366 with a career-high 12 long balls and another 46 RBI. Smith doesn't strikeout a ton, and there is something there that the Cubs clearly like given the priorly reported interest.

As noted in the report, if Smith makes the team, his contract would carry a $1.75 million base salary. In addition, the contract can max out at $3.5 million with bonuses. Smith appears to be another contingency plan, along with Peralta, in case Cody Bellinger is not a Cub by Opening Day.

By adding players on minor-league deals, the Cubs can easily add depth while not breaking the bank. In fact, adding Smith and Peralta gives the Cubs veterans in camp in the event that the team's youth isn't ready for Opening Day. Worst case scenario, this is a tryout for both players with not only the Cubs, but other teams.

Cubs fans will likely cringe over these additions. That said, these moves do not block a Cody Bellinger return before the season starts.
