Cubs agree to contract extension with manager David Ross

It was reported Friday morning that the Chicago Cubs are "among the favorites" to land prized free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa. If the Cubs are able to reel in the two-time All-Star, he'll be playing under David Ross not only for this upcoming season, but likely at least a couple of more years to come.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Ross' agreement is the first managerial contract in place since the nearly 100-day lockout was lifted on Thursday, and his current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2022 campaign. Ross took over as Chicago's manager ahead of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and has gone 105-117 in his first managerial gig.

Ross played 883 big-league games over 16 years — primarily as a backup catcher — and suited up for seven different teams, including the Cubs in his final two seasons in 2015 and 2016. He won a pair of World Series titles as a player, first with the Boston Red Sox in 2013 and then in 2016 with Chicago.

Prior to the lockout, the Cubs hired a new general manager, Carter Hawkins, in October.
