Cubs catcher Jose Lobaton on 60-day IL with shoulder sprain

Chicago Cubs backup catcher Jose Lobaton will be sidelined for some time following an unfortunate and unlucky injury he suffered in Tuesday's game at the Milwaukee Brewers.

Per ESPN, Lobaton was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday with a shoulder sprain after he landed awkwardly while running to first base in the top of the ninth inning of Tuesday's 2-1 loss. The 36-year-old stretched at the bag to avoid Brewers pitcher Josh Hader, who initially missed touching first for the game's final out, and ultimately landed on his shoulder.

Lobaton was visibly in quite a bit of pain shortly after the play, and Cubs manager David Ross told reporters Tuesday night the injury was "pretty serious."

Along with adding Lobaton to the IL, the Cubs selected the contract for catcher Taylor Gushue from the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.

This season, Lobaton has gone hitless in 11 at-bats, all of which occurred in June.
