Cubs Make Minor Deal with Tampa Bay Rays
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs changed their narrative leading up to the MLB trade deadline going from sellers to buyers in roughly a week's time. On Monday, the Cubs bought on perhaps the best remaining bat on the trade market, acquiring third baseman Jeimer Candelario from the Washington Nationals for prospects DJ Herz and Kevin Made. In addition, the team also acquired reliever Jose Cuas from the Kansas City Royals for Nelson Velazquez.

Now, the Cubs are making a smaller move and clearing space in their system by sending Adrian Sampson, Manny Rodriguez, and international free agent money to the Tampa Bay Rays for minor-league pitcher Josh Roberson.

Roberson has pitched the 2023 season with the Triple-A Durham Bulls. After ascending up three minor-league levels in 2022, Roberson has pitched well in 31 appearances with the Rays' affiliate. In 36.0 innings of work, Roberson has accumulated a 4.50 ERA, three saves, four holds, 43 strikeouts, and 22 walks. Although Roberson's numbers don't jump off the page, the Cubs must like something about the 27-year-old from a pitching-depth perspective.

As for the Cubs' departures, Adrian Sampson and Manny Rodriguez, along with international free agent money, are heading to Tampa Bay. Both pitchers have spent time between the majors and minors over the last two-plus seasons, but ultimately found themselves on the outside looking in with new faces in the clubhouse.

Sampson was recently activated from the 60-day IL and outrighted to Triple-A Iowa, where both pitchers have pitched. So far in 2023, after two spectacular seasons with the Cubs, Sampson has pitched to a 10.17 ERA in Triple-A. His struggles are well-documented in 2023, meaning a change of scenery might be just what the doctor ordered.

As for Rodriguez, the hard-throwing righty had two solid stints with Chicago in 2021 and 2022, just as Sampson did. However, Rodriguez hasn't struggled as much in 2023, posting a respectable 4.42 ERA while serving as a closer for the Iowa Cubs. "Man-Rod" closed out 13 of 14 save opportunities in 35 appearances and 38.2 innings of work. In addition, Rodriguez has struck out 56 and only walked 18. Both pitchers will possibly get a shot with Tampa Bay at some point this season.

This move is likely to clear up spots in Triple-A Iowa for prospect promotions and allow the Cubs to continue making moves at the deadline. Plus, a change of scenery for players that seem blocked is never a bad thing.

The Cubs will likely make another move or two as they gear up for the stretch run. The Cubs are currently 53-53, five games back of the Cincinnati Reds, and three games out of the Wild Card. The Cubs have a real shot to make some noise toward the end of the season after getting hot at the right time.
