Diamondbacks option RHP Slade Cecconi, select LHP Andrew Saalfrank from Reno

In preparation for their upcoming three-game series, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made the decision to option RHP Slade Cecconi.

Cecconi had the opportunity to start three games in August and also provided relief in two others.

But, despite delivering five strong outings, where he maintained an impressive 2.57 ERA and never allowed more than two earned runs in a single game, these performances were seemingly thrown out the window against the Orioles over the weekend.

A six-run fourth inning forced Cecconi to depart the game prematurely, resulting in a disappointing start that caused his ERA to rise to 4.44.

In exchange for sending Slade Cecconi down to Reno, the Diamondbacks have promoted LHP Andrew Saalfrank to make his major league debut.

Saalfrank was drafted by the D-backs in the 6th round of the 2019 draft. Since then, he has slowly worked his way up through the minor league system.

In 2023 with the Reno Aces, Saalfrank boasts a 4-2 record accompanied by a remarkable 2.35 ERA. Additionally, during his time in Double-A this season, the 26-year-old achieved an impressive 4-0 record with a 2.70 ERA, primarily in a relief role.

Saalfrank’s arrival will significantly bolster the Diamondbacks’ bullpen, providing much-needed depth as they gradually reintegrate arms into their starting rotation.

The first pitch for the D-backs’ matchup against the Rockies is set for 1:10 PM, with Merrill Kelly taking the mound for Arizona.
