Dodger Fans React to Unfortunate Dustin May Injury News

Tuesday, the Dodgers announced Dustin May will undergo elbow surgery on July 18^th and will miss the remainder of the season.

When I heard the news, I was sick to my stomach. The 25-year-old May has been through Tommy John surgery in May 2021. He went through a fifteen-month grueling rehabilitation process to make a triumphant return against the Miami Marlins on August 20, 2022. He had mixed results before he went on the IL with lower back tightness on September 22, 2022, finishing his 2022 season. May realized he was exhausted before he took the Major-League field.

After a normal offseason where he could train normally, May was phenomenal during spring training earning the second spot in the Dodger starting rotation. From the start of the 2023 regular season to May 17^th against the Washington Nationals when May felt right elbow pain, May was the second-most reliable Dodger starter.

In 48 innings, May had 4 wins and a loss with a 2.63 ERA and 34 strikeouts. When May went on the IL, he left a glaring hole in the starting rotation.

At first, the Dodger medical staff tried a PRP injection in hopes of healing May’s flexor tendon. The Dodgers hoped May would return after the All-Star break.

Apparently, the PRP injection didn’t work. While the flexor tendon is different from Ulnar Collateral Ligament, which was replaced in May 2021, having two major elbow surgeries in a 26-month period is devastating for anyone, particularly a young Major-League pitcher.
