Former Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy announces retirement
Former Chicago White Sox catcher Jonathan Lucroy plans to announce his retirement at the Brewers Wall of Honor ceremony. Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Jonathan Lucroy was one of the most popular Milwaukee Brewers players in recent memory. Even though he had not announced his retirement, the team laid out a plan to induct the two-time All-Star to the Brewers Wall of Honor. Lucroy, however, has chosen the occasion to officially announce his retirement from baseball. He will sign his retirement papers in Milwaukee at the ceremony. Bob Nightengale announced the news on Twitter, though he mistakenly referred to the Wall of Honor as the Brewers Hall of Fame:

Jonathan Lucroy Released a Statement Regarding Retirement

Per Adam McCalvy on Twitter, Jonathan Lucroy released the following statement:

“I am honored to retire a Milwaukee Brewer and be inducted into the Wall of Honor amongst so many of the greats in this franchise. The Brewers and the city of Milwaukee have always held a special place in my heart, I feel at ease and at home here. The fans have always embraced me and lifted me up. It is a special experience to play in Milwaukee and I want to thank the fans, the front office, and the baseball staff for making my time in Milwaukee so memorable.”

Lucroy spent seven seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. During that time, he hit .284/.342/.436 with 79 home runs and 387 RBI. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 2014 and 2016. Lucroy was particularly special in 2014, when he hit .301/.373/.465 with 13 home runs and 69 RBI. He also set the Brewers’ franchise record for doubles in a season with 53.

Ryan Braun Will Also Be Inducted to the Wall of Honor

In addition to Jonathan Lucroy, the Milwaukee Brewers will also induct Ryan Braun to the Wall of Honor on Saturday. The former Rookie of the Year and MVP was a six-time All-Star with the Brewers and is the franchise’s all-time home leader. He officially retired towards the end of the 2021 season, though he was no longer on any Major League roster.

Ryan Braun ended his career with averages of .296/.358/.532 and hit 352 home runs and drove in 1,154 runs. From 2007-2012, Braun was one of the best offensive players in baseball. During that span, he hit .313/.374/.568 and averaged 34 home runs and 107 RBI per season.

Prince Fielder Will Be Added to the Brewers Walk of Fame

The greatest honor the Brewers can give to any former player is a place on the Walk of Fame. In addition to Braun and Lucroy’s addition to the Wall of Honor on Saturday, Prince Fielder will be added to the team’s Walk of Fame. The last time a player was given this honor was in 2018 when Geoff Jenkins was added.

During his time with the Brewers, Fielder hit .282/.390/.540 to go with 230 home runs and 656 RBI. A three-time All-Star, Fielder became the youngest player in Major League history to hit 50 home runs in a season. In just his second year, he hit .288/.395/.618 with 50 home runs and 119 RBI. Arguably, his 2009 season was even better. That year, Fielder hit .299/.412/.602 with 46 home runs and 141 RBI. His 141 RBI that season is a team record.
