Journeyman Triple-A Pitcher Leaves Organization, Signs in Korea
USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers minor league pitcher William Cuevas has left the organization, per Oklahoma City Dodgers broadcaster Alex Freedman, as he'll make his return to a team he has familiarity with.

For Cuevas, he's spent the last 14 years playing for a variety of organizations and in multiple countries, with stops in Mexico and Korea in his past.

In 2023, he found his way to Oklahoma City to play for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate, recording a 2-2 record with a 6.14 ERA across nine starts and 11 total appearances.

With Cuevas set to return to South Korea, that opens up a spot for a recent acquisition to take his place.

The Dodgers signed a pair of MLB veterans on Tuesday, and former Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery will take Cuevas' roster spot in OKC.

The 33-year-old Montgomery signed with the Dodgers in an attempt to return to the majors after serving as both a starter and reliever over the course of six seasons in the big leagues, most recently with the Kansas City Royals in 2020.

The most memorable moment in his career was when he closed out Game 7 of the 2016 World Series as a member of the Cubs' snapping their famous 108 year championship drought.

Montgomery will make his debut tomorrow and joins the organization at an opportune time for him.

The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen has been an uncharacteristic sore spot this season, and if Montgomery gets off to a productive run with Oklahoma City -- as either a starter or reliever -- he could be an unexpected call up if the big club's relief problems continue.

As of now, Montgomery is not on the Dodgers 40-man roster, but given that there may be a change on the horizon, a spot on that list could be available in short order.
