Marlins' Starling Marte can field, run but unlikely to hit due to hand injury

Per an ESPN story, Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly told SiriusXM Radio on Thursday that center fielder Starling Marte can pinch run or field when the Marlins next play the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild-card series.

The 31-year-old likely won't be available to hit, however, due to the nondisplaced fracture in the bone leading into his left pinkie finger that he suffered late in Wednesday's 5-1 win.

Marte was struck in the left hand by a pitch in the top of the ninth of Game 1 and was immediately listed as day-to-day by the Marlins. It was initially feared that he suffered a broken hand, but X-rays later confirmed the injury was to his pinkie.

Marte will have an extra day to recover, as Thursday's outing between the clubs was postponed because of the weather.

Miami acquired Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 31. He hit .281 with six home runs, 27 RBI, 14 doubles and 10 stolen bases during the regular season.
