Mets plan to speak with Theo Epstein about president of baseball operations job

The New York Mets failed to make the playoffs the last two years with Luis Rojas serving as manager and confirmed Monday that Rojas won't hold that role for 2022. In addition, they need a new president of baseball operations as soon as reasonably possible.

It appears the Mets aren't wasting time attacking one of their offseason chores.

Per Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets plan to speak with former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs executive Theo Epstein about their president of baseball operations opening perhaps as soon as this week. Most recently, Epstein worked as a consultant for MLB. It's unclear if the 47-year-old who helped build two World Series winners in Boston and one in Chicago would be interested in accepting the Mets job.

Puma added the Mets have not yet requested permission to interview individuals currently employed by other clubs, specifically Oakland Athletics executive vice president Billy Beane. Beane is close with current Mets team president Sandy Alderson, but Steve Berman of The Athletic noted Monday that Beane told reporters he didn't know if the Mets had reached out to the A's about his services.

Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns was reportedly coveted by the Mets last year, but the Brewers denied New York's request to interview him for the job at that time.
