Mets reliever Sean Reid-Foley has season-ending Tommy John surgery

The New York Mets have thus far avoided catastrophic injury woes this spring and went into Wednesday night's game at the division-rival Washington Nationals sitting atop the National League East standings at 21-10. 

However, the Amazins confirmed some expected bad news before that encounter. 

As explained by The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), New York right-handed relief pitcher Sean Reid-Foley hasn't taken the bump since the end of April because of a partially torn elbow ligament. Per Phillip Martinez of SNY, the Mets announced that Reid-Foley underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday morning. 

The 26-year-old won't pitch again this season and will instead return to Florida to continue the rehabilitation process. 

Reid-Foley appeared in seven contests for the Mets in the opening month of the campaign and allowed six runs with eight strikeouts across 10 innings of work. The initial hope was that he may be able to avoid going under the knife, but the situation changed earlier this week. 

"It's unfortunate. But we're lucky in today's world it's something that can be fixed," manager Buck Showalter said back on May 1. 

Understandably, it's far too early to tell if Reid-Foley will be fully healthy for the start of the 2023 season.
