Miami Marlins Swing Minor Trade with Pittsburgh Pirates
USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday, the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates swung a minor trade with the Marlins acquiring reliever Roddery Munoz.

Per Christina De Nicola on social media:

#Marlins acquire RHP Roddery Muñoz from Pirates for cash Muñoz was recently DFA’d.

23-year-old pitched as high as Triple-A level (28 games/10 starts) for Washington & Atlanta systems in 2023.

5.86 ERA

9.3 K/9

6.3 BB/9

Ryan Jensen DFA’d to make room on the 40-man roster

The Pirates had DFA'd him to make room for the signing of first baseman/DH Rowdy Tellez.

As indicated by those numbers, Munoz has some control issues, but he also has some strikeout ability. If he can harness it as he gets older, he could find himself as a member of the bullpen under Skip Schumaker.

Munoz has not appeared in a Major League game yet but has been in professional baseball since 2018. He came up with the Dodgers and spent time in the Dominican Summer League (2018-19) and then had to take a year off for the COVID pandemic. He started again in 2021 in the Braves system, where he stayed until 2023 - and spent time with Washington as well.

The Marlins are coming off a season that saw them win 84 games and make the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They earned a wild card spot in the National League playoffs but were swept in two games by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Marlins haven't done much this offseason other than see Josh Bell opt-in to his contract, and they saw Jorge Soler hit free agency.
