MLB Insider Says Newly Signed OF Aaron Hicks Still Has 'A Lot In The Tank'
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels have yet to make a real splash this offseason. They have signed six major league free agents — five relief pitchers — and committed the most money to Robert Stephenson on a three-year, $33 million contract.

Their lone position player signing could be a sneaky-good one, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi

Morosi recently appeared on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" and said the Halos got themselves a good one in outfielder Aaron Hicks, whom he says "has a lot left in the tank."

“A lot left in the tank for Aaron Hicks... it's a great pickup for the Angels.”

Even at 34 years old, Hicks has the potential to help bolster an Angels lineup alongside superstar Mike Trout. His numbers with the Baltimore Orioles last season suggest he could be one of the team's best hitters when healthy.

After being released by the Yankees in May 2023, Hicks was claimed by the Orioles and delivered a phenomenal performance for the American League's best team. He slashed .275/.381/.435 with a .806 OPS, hit seven home runs and 31 RBIs in 65 games, and held his own on defense.

Throughout Hicks' career, he's been a solid hitter and fielder. His late-season cameo with Baltimore demonstrated he has plenty left in the tank to help the Halos.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian has committed to Trout patrolling center field, so Hicks will play one of the corner outfield positions. The potential for Hicks to contribute in a platoon situation, perhaps with left-handed hitting outfielder Mickey Moniak, or at DH, could maximize his strength as a "lefty killer."

From the Angels' standpoint, Hicks represents a low-risk, high-upside signing, since the Yankees will be paying the majority of his salary through at least 2025.

Exactly how high is that upside? If he can pick up where he left off in 2023, Hicks' health will determine how far he can go.
