New York Yankees' Infielder Says He Wants to Be a Yankee For Life, But No Contract Extensions Have Taken Place
USA TODAY Sports

Despite no contract extension conversations taking place yet, New York Yankees' infielder Gleyber Torres says that he wants to be a Yankee for life and is open to contract discussions.

Per David Lennon of Newsday on social media:

Gleyber Torres, entering final yr of contract, said this AM, "I want to be a Yankee for a life," but added there has been no extension talks. Torres said he understood the team's hesitancy since the last two extensions, Severino & Hicks, didn't work out so well due to injuries.

Last week, we heard from general manager Brian Cashman that discussions hadn't taken place, so Torres's comments confirm that. A few things could be going on here:

1) The Yankees may truly just not be interested in retaining Torres for whatever reason. They may like him as a player and value him but just don't feel like extending themselves long-term.

2) The Yankees could be prioritizing Juan Soto in pending contract talks. The superstar slugger, just acquired from the San Diego Padres, will be a free agent at the end of the year as well. The team will likely need more than $400 million to have a chance at signing him, so perhaps they are saving up.

3) The Yankees may have interest in signing Torres, but they want to see how his season goes, and what happens with Soto next offseason. They could be in wait-and-see mode.

The 27-year-old made his major league debut in 2018 with the Yankees and made the All-Star team in both 2018 and 2019.

In six years with New York, he's a .267 hitter who also owns a .334 on-base percentage. He hit a career-high 38 homers back in 2019 and also drove in 90 runs that year.

Torres is coming off a bounceback season in 2023, one that saw him hit .273 with 25 home runs. He is joined in the Yankees' infield by Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Volpe and whoever officially wins the third base job.
