Phillies Deemed Fit For All-Star
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

As the Philadelphia Phillies approach Spring Training, don't be surprised to see them make a move. Dave Dombrowski is always on the phone working his magic and trying to make this team better.

Whether it be a hitter or pitcher, Dombrowski has done what he's needed to do to make this team better and give them a chance to win a World Series. As currently constructed, the Phillies have a chance to complete that task.

MLB.com recently put together a team formed by the best remaining free agents. Whit Merrifield was named the top remaining free agent at second base. Mark Feinsand writes that Philadelphia is one of the potential fits to land the three-time All-Star.

Merrifield isn't a can't-miss free agent, and with Bryson Stott slotted at second base for the foreseeable future, it wouldn't be a huge miss if they didn't land him.

However, as Feinsand notes, Merrifield brings versatility on the defensive side of the ball.

The eight-year veteran played 84 games in the outfield for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023 and 83 at second base.

At the very least, Merrifield could be someone who gives guys nights off.

If Kyle Schwarber needs a game to rest, the Phillies could slot Merrifield into that spot. If Nick Castellanos' defensive struggles become too much of an issue, he can fill that role.

There are multiple ways that Philadelphia could use his services, so the potential fit makes sense. With Spring Training right around the corner, expect Merrifield to agree to a deal with some team soon.
