Pirates Trade Cody Bolton to Mariners in Slew of Roster Moves
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton to the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations as part of several roster moves on Thursday.

Bolton, 25, was the Pirates’ seventh-round draft pick in 2019. The right-hander shuffled between Triple-A Indianapolis and Pittsburgh this season in what was his rookie campaign. In 16 relief appearances with the big league club, Bolton was 1-0 with a 6.33 ERA, 22 strikeouts and 15 walks in 21.1 innings pitched.

Additionally, two more players were claimed off waivers after Tucupita Marcano was claimed by the San Diego Padres earlier in the day.

Infielder Vinny Capra was picked up by the Milwaukee Brewers, and first baseman Alfonso Rivas was claimed by the Cleveland Guardians. Both players were acquired in mid-season trades with the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres, respectively.

Capra appeared in nine games for the Pirates this season and collected three hits in 21 at-bats. He drove in the first run of his career in a game against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 30.

After he was acquired at the trade deadline, Rivas slashed .234/.305/.436 with eight doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs in 40 games.

The Pirates’ 40-man roster now stands at 37 players. They needed to clear roster space for three players coming off of the 60-day injured list in Oneil Cruz, JT Brubaker and Angel Perdomo.
