Player from Christian Yelich trade commits to play college football
Monte Harrison. Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most famous transactions in the history of the Milwaukee Brewers franchise was the trade for Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins in the 2018 offseason. Yelich, of course, would go on to win the National League MVP Award in his first season with the Brewers, hitting .326/.402/.598 with 36 home runs and 110 RBI.

He finished second in MVP voting the following year when he hit .329/.429/.671 with 44 home runs and 97 RBI in a season that was cut short by his fractured knee cap.

In exchange for Yelich, the Brewers sent four prospects to Miami: Lewis Brinson, Monte Harrison, Isan Diaz and Jordan Yamamoto. While Yelich may have had a few down seasons following his injury, none of the four players that Milwaukee traded for him are playing in the major leagues now. In fact, one of them just committed to play football at the University of Arkansas.

Former Milwaukee Brewers Prospect Monte Harrison Will Play College Football in 2024

According to On3, 28-year-old Harrison has committed to play wide receiver for Arkansas this season:

As noted, Harrison was a four-star recruit back in 2014. Though he had offers from several schools back then, he decided to pursue a baseball career and the Brewers drafted him in the second round of the 2014 amateur draft.

Harrison has not used any years of college eligibility.

Monte Harrison Did Not Have a Great Baseball Career

In parts of three major league seasons with the Marlins and Los Angeles Angels, Harrison has career averages of .176/.253/.294. He only appeared in 50 games.

In nine seasons in the minors, Harrison hit .240/.327/.395 with 90 career home runs and 330 RBI. He also stole 210 bases.

Harrison’s final season in professional baseball actually came with the organization that originally drafted him. The Brewers signed him as a free agent when the Angels declined to re-sign him following the 2022 season. In 2023, Harrison played for the Nashville Sounds and hit .208/.277/.316 with five home runs, 23 RBI and 18 stolen bases.

Milwaukee released him in September of 2023.

Where Are the Other Players from the Christian Yelich Trade?

As mentioned previously, none of the four players that Milwaukee traded for Yelich are currently playing in the majors, nor are they even affiliated with any Major League team.

Lewis Brinson, at one time the Brewers’ No. 1 prospect, is now playing in the Mexican League. Isan Diaz is currently playing for the Lancaster Stormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Finally, Jordan Yamamoto announced his retirement from baseball in 2023.

If there was ever a trade that could be called a David Stearns masterclass, this is the trade. While Yelich may not ever go back to his 2018-19 form, at least he is still playing baseball.
